A mouthful of brackets... at 31 years old

#1 Post by Peebee »

Hi all,

First post of what will likely be many, so I just wanted to say hi.

Last week I had a braces fitted (Radiance sapphire upper and lower with white archwires). They've only been on a few days so I'm still getting used to things, but it's feeling less alien already.

23 months and 3 weeks to go...

Welcome PeeBee,

Congratulations on starting the journey! I got braced at the age of 33. You are not alone. Believe me, the time will go by very fast.

Best of luck on your journey!

Congrats!!

I'm about 10 months in...they get a lot easier to deal with (I pretty much eat everything I did before...except popcorn. I brush a lot more but that's probably a good thing! I'm less self-conscious than I was those first couple of weeks.) I'm 28 years old...feel a little silly being an adult with braces but life will go on!

Got my braces at age 30. I'm 31 now.

I was worried how people will react to it, but in reality nobody cared. I think 99% of the problem is in our head.
Noam.

I'm 31, and I'm in for a 1-1.5 year sentence. I live in a place where not many pple, including children, have braces. I was quite self concious at first, but after 3 months, I smile more that I did before, and I'm quite enjoying the experience.

I am 32 and have had my braces for almost 3 weeks now... Seems to be the thing to do at our age, I was just trying to be cool

haha, nah its not so bad, most people dont really care and as scared as I was to put colored ligs on, unless someone is real close and really looking you cant even tell. Its all in our heads, we are self conscious and although it is on my mind every day about how I look with my braces my friends and family around me dont even mention it anymore and even forget already.

Congrats on taking the plunge. As many have posted above, it's usually more in the head of the individual with braces than in those around them. It is increasingly common to see adults in braces. Part of it is the awareness and desire to have nice teeth.

Our practice is about 35% adults, and many of them were unable to have orthodontic treatment for a variety of reasons as children or teens. It definitely helps to have a community of friends in the same boat, share ideas on this forum, and have other adult patients in the office. Best of luck with your treatment!

33 here and have been braced for 21 months now. I cannot wait to get these things off! The closer I get the more I want them off haha. Right now I have TADS installed in my upper jaw to help close the gaps between my canines and lateral incisors.

I've had the TADS in for about 3 weeks now and the gaps haven't even budged. I use the end of a toothbrush to measure - it fits in there and wiggles slightly, the same as 3 weeks ago. Close gaps darn you!

Have fun, it's a long ride!
