Its great to hear everyone is improving in their respective stages!

I am on my 4th day post-op and feeling way better than I ever expected! I only had my lower jaw moved forward as opposed to both, which probably helps though.

I got discharged from hospital yesterday, so am a bit wary as to the difference when all the nice hospital meds are out of my system. But so far I have had little pain at all. My swelling has definately peaked today which is not pleasent, but i'm just working through the babyfood and as much liquid as I can!

Good luck to everyone

I'm on week 3 and teeth are still wired shut.

I can't fit anything in between my teeth so it is liquid food for me. I didn't want to blend solid food cos it tastes funny and it is hard to swallow.

3 more weeks to go.......

Josh ate a burger and 2 orders of fries from In and Out today! He is 15 days post op! I couldn't believe it. He said he wanted to try. He was one happy happy boy!

I haven't the courage to weigh him but I'm sure he is down in weight. He was around 85 pounds before surgery.

He goes back to school on 9/7. He is doing this "drool and slurp" thing and I'm not sure how well that is going to go over. He is getting better about noticing, but it's not going to be good if he's drooling and slurping in 7th grade!

Hello everybody, had my upper jaw moved forward 9 days ago! It all went very smoothly and I didnt need strong painkillers for long, so I got discharged the next day :) Niggly pain but paracetamol sorts that out, hardly any bruising, and my swelling peaked at the end of last week and is coming down nicely! Looking forward to proper food, they said soft diet for 3 weeks, tried a bit of real chewing but it's difficult so mostly had to give up and swallow! It's so odd having my top teeth infront of my bottom ones.
One thing, since I came round i've noticed one of my legs has gone a bit stiff, it's kind of improved with walking about but I can still notice it, is that a normal side effect of anaesthetic? Or should I ask someone about it?

For those of you who have successfully transitioned into the chewing phase, how did you get there?

I'm supposed to be chewing on foods like eggs and tofu, but I just end up mashing with my tongue or swallowing them whole. And when I do try, all the food gets stuck in this crevice between my cheek and teeth.

I'm allowed to eat " softish foods that I can kinda swish around to swallow" so stuff like rice/pancakes/ mac and cheese.. etc etc .. cheese cnchildas.. i kinda just swish around til I swallow them. Sounds like you are doin ok though.. 24 days post op today here.

I still cannot eat. I don't know why my upper and lower teeth have to be wired shut for 6 full weeks because I see a lot of you don't have to. This is harder than I thought.

Vince I really feel for you having your teeth shut still :[ keep in there buddy its gonna be so great to get them off trust me!

I am now almost a week since having my bands removed, as soon as they were removed it was so awkward and actually painful, it seemed like my jaw kept popping out of place, my first plate of scrambled eggs were pretty tasty though even though i had to shove them in there because I was so scared to open my mouth wider. I actually got so frusterated I staring crying while on the phone with my dad it was just so awkward and uncomfortable; for the first 5 hours i talked with my teeth clenched together.
On the brightside things are way better I am now eating lots of things from pasta, eggs, all kinds of rice, more pasta, and everything else I can manage to chew decently. Its still difficult to chew some things and i find im swallowing more than chewing.. But things have definately improved. since the 16th of August :) Swelling is basically gone, no more bruising at all, I still dont have feeling in my lower lip and chin area, but I have become used to this :) Next appointment to see my surgergeon is Tuesday!

How does it feel like after the wires or rubber bands are removed after 4-6 weeks?

I am curious to know how to feels like to chew again...

I don't feel like my jaw is popping out any more. Previously when I yawn, I feel like my jaw is dropping. I am almost 4 weeks post-op and I don't get this feeling any more.

Wow, congrats to you for making it through so long with your jaw wired or banded shut!! I can't imagine how tough it is...I wasn't wired or banded at all, and still I complained about the diet!

As for the chewing, I'm just over 2 weeks post op and am still really struggling with trying to chew anything. Not sure when this will get better. Hopefully soon!

Today is my 5th week. Can't believe I made it this far. I have not seen my tongue in 35 days!

My doctor will remove the wires 2 more days from now and I should be able to chew again... He said a young man like me should be OK within 5 weeks and there is no need to wait till the 6th week.
