Forbidden foods
Good day all! I have been checking out this site for a few weeks and finally joined. I am getting my top braces next Monday (eeek!) and am wondering what foods will be forbidden by my ortho so I can gorge on them this week! I tried to search for this topic but only found what I CAN eat after I get them. Thanks for any information!

Good luck with your bracing! Some forbidden foods that I can think of off the top of my head: caramel, nuts, hard candy, crunchy foods (like hard chips), popcorn. I think these things can break your brackets off.
Also, it will be difficult to eat anything chewy, like pizza crusts, or to really bite into anything, like a burger (although I can still eat burgers, I just tear them into small pieces).
Hope this helps!

Even though there are foods we are not suppose to eat, a lot of us push the limits and still eat them haha
The first time I had braces I ate anything and everything and not even a single bracket came off.
This time around i've been pretty naughty. I had 2 brackets come off due to eating hard chips and mentos in the first month. My wire also came out when I ate cookies and chocolate.
If you choose to eat something "forbidden" just be careful with it. For example, if you're going to have chocolate, try melting it in the microwave for a couple of seconds or if you want nuts, blend them up in the blender.
Stay away from hard sticky candy though!

At my five month appointment my ortho put brackets on my back molars and lowered me to a .012 wire....i ate gummy bears (the very chewy Haribo bears) and the wire bowed between the two back molars, on all sides. When i told him it was bowed he said, yeah sometimes these smaller wires bend, then he looked and said, wow i've never seen them bow out like that. LOL, i did not tell him gummy bears were part of my diet that month. Now i'm back in the .016 and eating tortilla chips with no problems, but i'm still careful when chewing.
Instead of baby back ribs i eat boneless, which is the biggest food change i've made. Other wise i eat all the stuff i used to, just slower.

The only food I have not been able to eat are caramels. Well, I have not even attempted to try them.
I have had taffy, peanuts, cashews, chips, apples (cut up), gummy worms, steak, even carrots.... all kinds of food. I had a sub sandwich yesterday and some of those mini pumpkin candies by Brach's (I know, gross, but they smell so good and remind me of Halloween!) . I am making hamburgers tonight. I am able to eat them by biting right into them, it might not look pretty stuck in my braces but it taste good.
In the beginning because your teeth will be sore, you may want to stick to soft foods like pasta, soup, soft sandwiches... Over time you will be able to eat basically anything. You will be more aware of your braces so you will probably chew slower.
I say until you get those brackets on, eat all your favorite foods!

After three months of braces I have managed to re-learn how to eat all of the forbidden foods except for toffee and honey comb bars (crunchies) by cutting things into smaller pieces. You also get to know the stuff which you can eat, but only at home because all the stuff gets stuck in your braces - I never look great after eating cheeto's or tabouli

Oooo ashesgap you said the magic word: tortilla chips! That is actually one of my concerns since I love Mexican food.
My ortho said I have to have metal on the bottom but could have metal OR ceramic on the top. I'm thinking I should go with metal on the top, too, so that maybe there is less chance of breaking them if I eat chips or whatever. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Crusty bread caused my wires to pop out at the back very early on when the wires were quite flexible. Other than that i'm able to eat most foods someway or other and haven't had any problems with broken brackets.
As i have clear ligatures on the top braces, i have to avoid any foods that stain especially curry (tumeric) and coffee which has been extremely difficult! I couldn't resist drinking tea but have to have it really milky so it doesn't stain so badly!

Braced for 19 months 2 weeks and 2 days.

Yeah, I've had braces for about a year and a month now and I have kept eating and eating gum, candy, popcorn, and all that forbidden stuff. What will it do to my teeth? Please help. Thankyou!

There are a lot of rules, but the ortho will tell you.. but I'm sure many of them you can eat, just be careful and aware if you're pushing the limits. I still eat chips, gummy bears.. but I can't eat beef jerky or carrots.. so you sorta figure out what you can and cannot eat. I have yet to break a bracket!

Re: Forbidden foods
I think it differs from person to person. Some can eat everything without any problems while some can barely eat anything without a bracket popping off.
I eat asI used to eat before I got braces without any problems. This weekend I eat 2 bags of popcorn and hard candy, and they are still on. Bite with my front teeth too, and eat raw carrots. Biting into apples, and all other no no stuff. It’s amazing they are still on…
No brackets has popped of yet.
You will quickly learn what you can and can’t eat with your braces
