Extraction Question- Scared and Confused :(

#1 Post by ShySmile »

Hi Everyone,

Shortly I will be having both upper 2nd Premolars removed...(how long do extractions usually take to close?)

I am a little worried as I have been reading that some people experience changes to their facial appearance due to having teeth removed....??

Also I have read posts about teeth moving too far back...making your smile "dissapear" behind your top lip.

ALthough my teeth are quite crowded, I like the fact that I have big pearls and i dont want them to be hidden once they are straight!

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated![/b]

Hello

I had 2 teeth on my top removed and my ortho said it takes aboubt 6 months to close. I got mine removed in May and they are almost closed. Someone recently said that my face did change a little, but I think thats normal. it's not going to be too dramatic. I wouldn't worry about it if you trust your ortho. If you have any concerns, talk to him/her about it!

There are a lot of threads on this topic in the braces forum. Extractions spaces close at about 1mm per month but may vary and removal of teeth does not have to sink in one's face. It depends on whether the front teeth move back more, or the back teeth move forward to close the space. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning is the key. Good luck!
