linguals fitted at same time?

Hi everyone.
The ortho I am intending to have treatment with wants to fit both braces at the same time. He says this is necessary as the teeth may move otherwise (after the moulds are taken), so both braces need to be fitted at the beginning of treatment.

I was told by another ortho I had a consultation with that the braces should be fitted separately, with one about a month after the other. When I asked the reason for this he didn't explain it, he just said "that's the way it's done" (as an aside, this is why I didn't chose this ortho. I won't chose an ortho who isn't prepared to answer such simple questions).

I'm a bit concerned now that the ortho I've chosen doesn't know what he is talking about, as it seems from reading on here that everyone has theirs fitted separately.

Has anyone had them both fitted at the same time? What are the reasons for/against doing this?

I have Incognito braces, and had the brackets fitted to both the uppers and the lowers at the same time. However, I only had the wire put into the lowers. This is because I had to have an operation to remove an impacted canine from the roof of my mouth, and the upper wire would have got into the way. I had the upper wire put in a month later.

I have a friend who also has linguals, and she had the uppers fitted a few months before the lowers, because some of her upper teeth went behind the lowers and so needed to be moved first. So this was for obvious reasons.

When I asked my ortho if it was ok to put the wires in at different times, he said it was necessary in my case because of the op and might make it a bit easier for me to get used to the braces and speaking with only one wire in for a while. But I think if it wasn't for my op, he would have put them in at the same time. So, as with all these things, I think that every case is different. My ortho did tell me it was important for him to fit the upper brackets at the same time as my lowers, despite not putting in the wire at first, because once I'd had extractions on top, my teeth would move and it's important that your teeth are exactly the same as they were when the impressions were made.

With linguals it is best to fit at the same time. Otherwise if the teeth in the unbracketed arch move from the movement on the bracketed arch (which is HIGHLY likely) then the trays/braces will not fit properly.

Hi there,

DOnt have much experience with this, but what i can say is that I am getting my Linguals and lower ceramics fitted at the same time next week, and extractions done one week later.... A few dentist have ask me why my ortho is planning on doing extractions AFTER braces are fitted.

I asked my dentist and he simply said "Do you want your treatment time to be longer?" Errr...no, so i just shutup at asked no more questions!

Anyone a little more approachable know the answer to this??

I'm not having lingual braces on both - just upper's.

But I didn't want to wait as long to get my braces as you have to wait for your lingual brace to be made so I asked if I could have my ceramic brace fitted earlier. He thought about it & said I don't see why not.

It's only going to be 2 weeks earlier & my bottom teeth are far worse than my top so i'm hoping this is going to be ok

Also Shysmile i'm having my extractions out on my uppers with my brace on - my ortho said this is the way it's done with the lingual brace. I think it's because the brace has been designed for your teeth especially & if you have teeth out before the brace is fitted they could move out of position. Just a guess anyway. Had my lower extractions out before my brace is fitted.

I had mine fitted a week apart, but I think this was purely to give me time to get used to having it in my mouth. He felt that both at the same time would be too much. Unless they're fitted a long time apart, I can't imagine it would matter hugely (but I am only guessing).

I can answer the extractions post-braces question - I have had my upper linguals on for over 4 months now, and am probably getting teeth out soon-ish. The reason they weren't taken out earlier (eg pre-braces), is that when you first get braces on, you have a thin, weakish wire. As your teeth/mouth get more used to having braces, the ortho puts on thicker, stronger wires that move your teeth more quickly. The idea is that, when you finally get teeth out, the holes/gaps will close more quickly with that thicker, stronger wire. Hope that helps!

Makes sense to me anyway.

having extractions the week after! I am so ringing my ortho right now!!!!

ShySmile, I guess everyone's situation is super different. perhaps it is that removing teeth now will enable braces to sit better on your teeth? Or perhaps help with the closure of your jaw? Just ask your ortho about it before you get going. I'm sure one rule cannot apply to everyone though

Hi all

I had teeth out first and then ceramics bottom and linguals top fitted on the same day - had no issues.
Can recommend the "no-mess-no-fuss" kind of approach if you have the choice
