Hey Not-So-Buckey-Anymore!

So glad to see you back! Your ligs actually look better after 6 months than my clear ones did afte 1 month. And of course, your pearly whites are still pearly white! How do you do your baking soda and peroxide brushing routine? Do you mix it up as a paste? If so, what's the ratio? I'm seriously considering trying that.

I cannot wait until my upper front teeth lie flat like yours! I didn't realize what a difference that made in the appearance of one's upper lip. Maybe I'll actually HAVE an upper lip after this is all done. LOL!

Take care!

Hey all!!!

Catgyrl welcome to my humble abode...again :D. I started bs and peroxide about 7 years ago, at first I sprinkled some over my toothpaste, a year later all I used was baking soda to brush in place of toothpaste until I got braces which was September of 2009. About 3 years ago I learned about all of the things peroxide does and began using it as a mouth rinse. Right now I use either a natural toothpaste like Tom's of Maine or Kiss My Face, or go straight baking soda when I'm cheap and don't feel like spending over a dollar for my tooth care. Now if only I could find a cheap alternative for floss and threaders...

Now, how I do it is I pour a small mountain in my hand, lick it up, distribute the baking soda in my mouth(I know it sounds disgusting, but hey, I'm used to it :D) wet my toothbrush, and begin brushing. I also follow up with a brush rinse where I empty the baking soda contents from my mouth, rinse my toothbrush and get to brushing again. Then I rinse with a cap full of peroxide and hold it for atleast a minute to take advantage of all of it's antiseptic qualities. Afterwards, I have squeaky clean teeth...literally.

I was so excited when my teeth stopped doing that strange, I used to suck my thumb flare thing. It really did make my upper lip look fuller since it no longer has to stretch itself over my bucked teeth :D.

Hi Ashesgap!

Thank you sooooo very much! I looked at these pics just when I wondered why in the world I got braces. I remember those days. My family tried EVERYTHING to get my thumb out of my mouth. With all of their efforts, it didn't work. Hopefully your 3 year old will learn quicker than I did. Try putting a sock around the little ones hand, that was the only method that kept my thumb out of my mouth for the night once thanks to my Grandma.

I think I like the peachy look too! This is the ONLY set of ligs I've had that I can eat any staining food I want without a drawback. It's awesome!

Thanks Dilema! I think my new Ortho is really going to do some amazing things for the next 12-14 months. I can't wait!

Oh. My. Goodness!!! PrincessPeach! I'm so glad your still checking AW out!!! This bite is almost there! Those holes are closing (or are trying to without the help of rubberbands) and my new Ortho is going to make my arch wider! Yes! I hear pain in my future. :P

Jensceana! Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of Buckey! Thank you much, :D I really wish I had some sherbert ice cream right now...that would make me all happy. Care to share? :P

ShySmile! Awwww!!! I'm glad I could help, I hear dry socket is a real *female dog* keep laughing in the time being because it'll keep you from crying. LOL!!! The peach happened by accident, yup, 6 months without orthodontic care can do some really interesting things to your ligs. I think I'm glad I go orange however, then it wouldn't have turned into the cool peach color I have! 8)

I'm so excited right now! Less than a week and I'll be back in business! I'm so excited I am probably going to have to go tinkle alot like I did the day I got my teeth pulled!

I also am praying and hoping I get this job with a law firm I applied for! If I do then I'll be able to pay my bills, buy gas for the car, stuff for the house, pay for braces, AND...I'll be able to buy food all in one paycheck! It's all so very exciting :D [/b]

Hey Emmajade

LOL!!!!!!! I thought I was the only one who did that! I like getting to the meat and potatoes sometimes and don't want to go through all of the talking. SHOW ME THE PHOTOS PRONTO! I don't feel bad about it now! The good thing about progress pics is they tell the story without words. The actual stories are entertaining to read when you actually have the time to do it. Unless something catches your eye of course

Anywho...:D

I have 12-14 more months of torture left to go. This first year went by pretty fast. I hope the rest is smooth sailing from here on.

I'm all giddy now seeing I only have 2 days left until my first adjustment in 6 months! It's like getting braces all over again. I keep seeing people with all of these braces and I just want to get this show on the road! I could pee my pants at how excited I am!!!

On another note, my lower wisdom teeth (my ONLY wisdom teeth) are beginning to surface! Can you believe it! After all this time of them hanging in the same spot, my teeth get a little movement going and here they come! I mean I literally have tooth that I can touch on the lower right side. This just isn't fair...I don't care if I made it through my first set of extractions unscathed! It isn't something I want to do every six months to a year!

Ok, I feel better now, I just had to vent. Stupid teeth.

How come you haven't had an adjustment for 6 months? That's a bit odd isn't it?

Extractions suck, i had 2 teeth pulled out (the same teeth as you) and upper and lower braces put on, all in the same visit! Not a pleasant experience, especially when you have the dental nurse holding down your head down while the dentist uses a pair of pliers to wrench teeth from your mouth. Oh and even more fun, one of my roots broke off so they had to dig around in the socket to get that out. Mmm good day that was...

You may not need to get your wisdom teeth removed if they aren't interfering with your treatment. I've got upper wisdoms that are fully through and don't need to come out. My bottom ones are growing sideways into my teeth and they haven't taken them out yet either.. so it might not be worth worrying about yet!

Hey Emmajade!

I started my treatment in Colorado in September 2009, then my family and I, packed up and moved to North Carolina this past June, and my very last adjustment was in May. Since then I've been looking for a new Ortho and trying to scrape together the funds to take care of my little toofs and I finally have the opportunity. :D I think that's the shorter version of my story :P

Oh. My. Goodness! That's some serious torture! Extractions AND getting your UPPER and LOWER done? All in one day? That almost sounds in humane, not to mention the assistant restraining you  ...It's a shame what we go through to get beautiful smiles...Here's to dental and orthodontic survival!!! :-88

That is an awesome glimmer of hope! I really don't want to get another friggin tooth pulled or dug out for that matter. I'm mostly worried because I have a small mouth, but my dentist said having my wisdom teeth could be to my advantage considering my treatment. I've heard that some have had their jaw collapse because of getting their wisdom teeth pulled.

Granted, after typing that it sounded absolutely ridiculous and probably is more of someones opinion than fact, :P but I still don't want to get rid of my wisdom teeth regardless...I'll definitely let you know how it goes!

Okay, I tried this, and have one word to describe the experience: BARF!!!! OMG - I just cannot lick up the baking soda, or sprinkle it into my mouth. It tasted like I was eating chalk. (I've also discovered that I have a weird "thing" when it comes to food textures...) Then came time for the peroxide, and at first I thought there was no taste, and then after a few seconds... BLECH! It reminded me of a mouthwash I once tried (I think it was Crest Whitening, which was white in color, and I threw out the whole bottle). It left this strange aftertaste that I just couldn't stomach.

So, I tried something different: I brushed with my regular toothpaste and rinsed, and then I wet my toothbrush, dipped it into the baking soda and applied it to various areas of my teeth, and that was much more tolerable. I can't really tell if it's worked yet, but I will be adding that to my daily routine.

Hey Catgyrl!

I should have warned you! If you have never had those two as a combo it's a different kind of an experience :FeelSick: Yeah...it's a whole other level of flavor when it comes to bs and peroxide. BS does taste like chalk but salty, and peroxide, definitely like bleach. It takes some definite getting used to.

I recommend starting with your regular toothpaste and sprinkling baking soda over the top. It's a good start and you don't have to combat the awful taste or fight with the baking soda's texture. I would say mix mouthwash and peroxide but I don't know if you'll start a nuclear war in your bathroom with all of those chemicals combined. Try diluting it with water, or you could peroxide, rinse, and then do a regular mouthwash to get the nasty bleach flavor out of your mouth.

I'm so used to it it's like second nature to me, wake up brush teeth with baking soda, rinse with peroxide. So much I don't even think of the way it tastes anymore! I actually get grossed out when I can taste toothpaste on my toothbrush! I know...I'm extremely weird :P

I have 8 hours and 13 minutes until I'm due in the Ortho's chair! Wish me luck everyone!!! How cool! The date is EXACTLY 14 months since I got my braces put on, and my 9th month of having my braces checked! What a coinky dink! :P

Whoa!!!

Check out the new look! This is going to take some getting used to!

Anywho! I made it through my first adjustment after 6 whole months!!!! :jump:

It took about 15 mins shy of 2 hours but I like it when they take their time. :P

What did I get done one may ask...well...I got some x-rays, some pictures, and I finally got to brush with out a wire which was so liberating! I just about hopped out of my own skin to get to the sink! Flossing was a breeze ahhhhhh 8). And the Ortho popped off 5 brackets...That was a little rough because the first one really, really, really didn't want to have ANYTHING to do with my Ortho, it took 2 mins to get it off!!! Then I hung out, and waited, and waited, and waited some more for my Ortho to come back and get the new brackets glued on.

I was experiencing the joy of being free toothed and then began to thank God I wasn't through with my treatment because if you ask me, I look like I had been chewing on rocks. My Ortho finally came back got the brackets glued on I picked my choice of ligs and they put my lower row on with a lighter wire. AND I'M POWERCHAIN FREEE!!!! Atleast until my next visit on Jan 4th :P

I had to tell my Ortho how I already began to miss my powerchain and she said "Don't worry you'll get it back because we have to close those holes, but your the first person I've worked with whose ever said they miss their powerchain."

8) She didn't know Buckey was one of a kind.

Here are my pics, I took these on Sunday directly after I woke up. I makes me happy to know I hadn't brushed my teeth before taking the pics :D

Image
Front - Loving the lavender by the way ;)

Image
Right - That hole is almost closed!!! Please pardon the wax...

Image
Left - I couldn't be a good shot and just left it alone at the best ones I've taken...

Image
Upper Arch - YUMMY!!!

Image
Lower Arch - Don't let it fool you, it's a lot narrower than it appears. Please remember the weird stuff you see that looks like plaque is wax. :o

Image
And the famous bite pic,the overjet is practically gone! I'm no longer "The Bucked Tooth Wonder!"

I'd like to thank the academy for awesome Orthodontists and their assistants, with out them I'd still be a lost cause. :D
