Late to the game but here at last!
I'm a 42 year old mom and today my 14 yr old daughter and I got our braces! Ceramics on top and metal on bottom.
I'm what my dentist refers to as The Poster Child for what one must never do when extracting a molar. My parents had one of my molars extracted back when I was just 9 years old and never got it replaced. And I've suffered from terrible head and back aches ever since.
I'm excited I'm finally getting this taken care of and for the whole process but *ouch* I didn't expect the pain to be this bad. Especially now that the ibuprofens worn off. I think I've filled my mouth with wax and I'm still hurting. I even took some Tylenol PM in the hopes that it will allow me to sleep. Sleep would be a very good thing as I'm a very light sleeper and have to work in the morning.
On a good note my daughter and I took the day off after getting our braces on. And went to the movies to watch Tangled. We even tried eating some Cream of Broccoli Soup. Tried being the operative word here!

WELCOME!!! And I should also say "Welcome to the Aged 42 and Braced Club". I am also a member of that club. Had mine on for 7.5 months and it's the best thing I ever did. I also have ceramics on top and metal on the bottom.
I think it's so wonderful you and your daughter are going through this together! I only have one good friend I can talk to about mine, and she got hers off a year ago.
Don't worry... your pain will subside. What helps me (believe it or not) is chewing sugarfree gum. It gets your blood flowing and helps relieve the pain (like babies teething). Give it a few days and then try eating slowly; mush up your food and shove it to the back teeth, if you have to. If you just keep in mind that after adjustments, you will probably feel some tenderness and soreness for a day or two, you'll be able to get through it much better.
Are you going to be taking pictures so you can monitor your progress? It's a fantastic way to check for movement, when you don't think there is any...
Good luck to you!

Rhomboid, yes my daughter and I both have our appts at the same time. She watched as I got mine installed and I waited for her to get hers. I'm just glad she didn't chicken out! Today we went shopping for Ambesol, Apple sauce, Ice Cream and stocked up on jello, mac n cheese, soups, cup o noodles, chef boy RD and dental wax!
Is it normal to go through so much wax? I used one tube yesterday and one today.
We've also discovered that our teeth seem to be crushed against each other. Is that normal? We can't get dental floss in between them, when we used to be able to no problem before braces. Is this what people are referring to when they say flossing is so difficult when you have braces? Since we can't get any dental floss in there we opted for the water pick but I'm not sure even that's getting in there.
catgyrl Yay another 42 year old! I'm so happy to see that someone else my age is going through the same thing. It's funny because I work with a lot of teenagers and I feel so awkward around them now! Just like an awkward teenager too. LOL
As for pics, that's the first thing my daughter did when we got in our car outside the Orthodontist's office. She took pics of both of us full face though so I can't post those. She was so excited. Not so excited today though. But I do want to take some of just of our teeth so we can post them on here and monitor our progress.

Hey, I'm 54 and just got ceramics on both upper and lower so...You are Young yet! ; ) Wish I'd have been able to get them ten years ago!! ; ) I just got mine put on four days ago and am also having lots of pain from the little screws or whatever those things are that are connected to the back teeth. I'm going thru tons of wax also!! The underneath of my tongue is getting canker sores and my cheeks are getting sliced up!! Ugh! Still, it will be worth the end result, right?? ; ) Is there a difference in the metal or ceramic braces, other than cosmetic? I wasnt offered a choice...he just chose the ceramics for me. I'm really nervous about getting two teeth pulled on the 13th of this month!! I've never had a permanant tooth pulled before! He said I need two uppers pulled...right behind the canines, on each side. He said my teeth are to crowded....other than that...I'm ok. Glad to meet another adult with braces! ; )
Re: Late to the game but here at last!
welcome! i'm going to be another mother daughter pair for getting braces. my daughter is supposed to get braces but she'll be getting invisilgn, and i'll be getting all metal most likely at a different practice, but i'm sure we can be brace buddies together to some extent! i was shocked when right after my decision to get braces and the sticker shock that comes w/ that, my daughter came home and told me the dentist said SHE needed braces. wow. i was afraid to break the news to hubby for a few days....but my youngest daughter told him.....and he was ok w/ it. (not thrilled, more 'like we'll do what we have to do' ok w/ it)

Re: Late to the game but here at last!
Hi all,
I am 50 year old male who just had, ceramic braces installed on January 20th.
I never had braces as a child and the ortho I went said that my bit my good and teeth straight.
So here I am starting off with the top an in late April the bottom metal will go on.
I am have two huge canker sores from braces have applied the wax. Yesterday my face was really swollen. If I don't talk it doesn't seem to irritated to much.
I ha 6 teeth extracted on December 6th 4 wisdom and tooth 5 an 12 because 5 was cracked and ha a cavity and very crowded. I developed a dry socket and the head aches were like migraines. Tooth 5 and 12 were a breeze having pulled and really no after pain it was thte 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) even though erupted caused all the issues.
estimated time for the braces about 30 months.
So hopefully this canker sore issue will clear up and i can move forward.
i understand that there are plastic sleeves that can be put on the braces instead of the wax.
Good luck to all of us on this journey.

Hi everyone, just found this site.
Had top brace installed yesterday, no pain at all really. Guess i've been lucky?
Just trying to work out how/what to eat again
Will see how it goes over next 18 months or so.
Good luck us!

That's so cool that you and your daughter have braces at the same time! I was planning on getting braces along with my child too, but we've been advised to wait about 2 years for all the perm teeth to grow in first. So, I'm up first! I've had my braces for 2 days now and so far so good. I seen this guy on youtube who uses cloriseptic strips (like listerine strips) to put between his lips and braces to numb the pain of the friction. maybe that will help ease your pain a little?

Vanessaness,
Welcome! I loved the Cream of Broccoli Soup reference! A lot of foods will not be friends at first!
Cute that your daughter has also gotten braces at the same time too. Wish you both all the best and look forward to hearing about the progress!
Yurs in smiles,
Shane

Re: Late to the game but here at last!
That's great that you have your daughter to go through this experience with! Mine go on on Monday and I don't know anyone else going through it who I'll be able to complain to, so this message board will probably be my good friend for the next while! I am a little concerned at how many posts I'm seeing about people being in so much pain I had to have gingival augmentation (gum grafting) done about 2 months ago before the braces went on since I had some receding gums in a couple of places. The recovery sucked and it was difficult to eat anything but soft foods for a couple of weeks...I guess I'm in for that again, huh? Good luck to you and your daughter!!

I will also be joining the ranks of 42 and braced on March 17th! I am looking forward to getting the process started, but not looking forward to the pain that everyone talks about. But I know that it is just part of the whole process. Congrats to both you and your daughter!
