Getting used to lingual braces

#1 Post by Linnie »

I am getting my braces on this Friday. I am a little concerned with the way I will speak after that. I have been wearing a mouthguard on my upper teeth for more than the years at night. I am wondering whether this will help getting used to speaking with lingual braces or have no effect at all. Any idea?

Hi Linnie,

I've had my linguals on for 3 weeks today but I won't lie, my speech was definitely affected, at the beginning (1st week or so) it was kind of off and people noticed. But they still understood everything I was saying I was just lisping and sounding like I had a brace. As soon as you get them on practice reading out loud, singing, anything that gets your forming sounds and words with your tongue. The more you do of this the better and quicker you adapt.

My speech rapidly picked up after that first week, and I haven't really looked back since. Whilst I still would say it isn't 100% it's pretty close and I don't really think about it anymore and have kind of accepted the odd (1 out of 100) word I might slightly lisp. I had an assessment day last friday where I had to give presentations, interviews etc and I managed to pass that and get offered the job so my speech couldn't have been off.

The linguals have been brilliant in my opinion, I told all of my friends about them anyway but nobody at work has noticed at all and now my speech "is back" they won't know. My teeth are definitely moving too, so don't fret too much, accept it will be slightly off at the start and just go with it as it gets back to normal pretty quickly.

Hope this helps
