Positioner problems/questions

#1 Post by NicoV »

Hi everyone,

My girlfriends braces have been removed some weeks ago but she still has some irritating contacts in her mouth and the lower and upper frontal teeth are still not fully aligned. Therefore she has been given a positioner which she’s wearing from 8PM to 8AM. This seems to be a real hell!

In the meanwhile the ortho has already placed a cc-retainer behind the 4 lower and upper frontal teeth.

For those amongst you that don’t know what a positioner is: It looks like the thing that a boxer wears to protect his teeth. They start with a plaster model of her mouth and then they saw every tooth out of the plaster model and place it in a new model in an ideal dental position. Based on this new ideal model they make the positioner.

But as you can already guess the positioner wants to correct the current position of the frontal teeth but the cc-retainer refuses to let them move. As a result she is having severe pain on those teeth. But the ortho says that he can’t remove the cc-retainer because these frontal teeth would go back to their old place because the positioner is not worn 24/7. He also says that they can only shift as a whole.

What do you guys think of the combination of the positioner with the cc-retainers. Does anyone want to share his experience with a retainer.
Furthermore she also says that she only feels her frontal teeth in the positioner when she bites in it and that she does not feel the molars nor the premolars. Is that normal?

Thanks for any contribution!
