extractions after Braces?

#1 Post by Vanessaness »

Is it normal to have your braces put on before getting your teeth extracted for said braces?

Most definitely. I got my braces on April 9th of this year, and got brackets put on all teeth except the last molars on both upper and lower, as well as my upper-left premolar (the tooth they were going to extract). So yeah, I had a "naked" tooth in the midst of all that metal! My upper teeth were wired all the way across until it got to that premolar.

On May 1st, I had the tooth extracted, and on May 6th, the wire was placed all the way across the gap to the back of my upper arch. I suppose it would depend on the work that needs to be done, but it definitely HAS been done.

Good luck!!

me too
but they did brace the ones to be extracted, so 2 weeks later when they took them out they popped right out-
being already loose because of braces...
as a patient i recomend the procedure..i previously had first premolars taken out-uppers- without being braced and they took longer to take out..

I'm getting two extractions this Thursday and my upper and lower braces were put on 2 weeks ago. They just left the wires and brackets off the teeth needing extracted. How are you all posting pics?! I cannot figure it out for anything! Also, need to know how to downsize first so it isnt so big! Thanks.

when u post a reply, there is a solid bar at the bottom under 'submit' that says upload attachement...you click on the browse button and look for the file location on your computer. i edit my photos in the software that allows me to upload my pics to the computer and i crop the pics down to a smaller size. hope that helps

My ortho actually planned it out where I had brackets put on with no wire, then I went and had the unbracketed teeth removed, then after they healed went back to the ortho and had wire put it. Three week process there with just brackets on!!

@takako Brackets without a wire? That sounds *awful*--I had just flex-tie on my front brackets while they were banding my molars (took three weeks, ugh) and they weren't tying my premolars to the flex-tie and those brackets scratched up my lips something fierce.

OP: I had my extractions four weeks before my bracketing date; my orthodontist doesn't like to have teeth pulled around braces, particularly on adults. He says it's too stressful. And given how awful my extractions were, I kind of agree that it would have been way too much pain and hassle. At the time, of course, I was like "But I want to hurry up and get this started!" Hope the extractions went well. :)

I'm going to be having a lower impacted wisdom tooth removed while fully braced .
I had my other 3 wisdom teeth removed over a year ago and didn't experience much pain, I hope this one will be the same.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded
