Do essix retainers affect speach?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Do essix retainers affect speach?

#1 Post by felicia »

I had Hawley retainers for about a month after my first debanding. My speach was affected pretty bad. The second time around I will get essix retainers and also permanent retainers on the back of my teeth (6 lower, 2 upper). I am just wondering how is that going to affect my speach? Are essix retainers as bad as the bulky hawleys?

My Essix retainers have no impact on my speech at all. Was a bit weird the first time I wore them, but after than no problem.

The only problem I've ever had with my Essex is a bit of a whistle when I say "S". (And I think this is only noticeable by me.)

Hi felicia!

Essex retainers affected my speech every so slightly. My "s" sounded like "sh" for a few days. You do have to get used to them. Like tumbledrylow says, only you yourself notices it.
