15 days in!

#16 Post by stepher7 »

Well I'm 15 days in now....it's gone by fairly quickly, but boy does the next year and a half or so seem like a reeeeeeeally long time!! I think my bottom teeth are starting to spread out more, which is exciting. However, the top is what people see more so I'll be happy when that's all nice and straight. I'm eating fairly normally again, thank goodness. Still can't bite into things very well, but I can at least chew solid food again! For some reason the last few days the brackets have really been doing a number on the inside of my mouth :( It seems like I had just figured out which spots needed wax consistently and then another spot popped up where things are poking and scraping. Very frustrating. I'm also EXTREMELY paranoid that I'll get food stuck somewhere and not notice and I'll be talking to people with something stuck in there lol I'm sure it's happened to most people with braces, but I'm very vigilant with rinsing my mouth out as I eat and then getting to the bathroom FAST afterwards! I've also noticed that when I wake up in the morning I've been clenching my mouth shut....anyone else do this? I didn't notice that I did it before braces, but maybe I did and the braces changing my bite makes me notice it now. Anyway, I have some more pics I'll put up when my batteries are charged :? I'm not sure if there's much noticeable difference yet but it's interesting to see the progression anyway!

You have really nice teeth already, they'll look fab when they're done. It gets so much easier, I've had mine for 8 months now. Am getting bottom ones on Thursday. All the things you say about eating and running to the bathroom made me laugh cox I do exactly the same but after a while you start to worry less, now I just turn to my work colleagues and say 'have I got any lettuce in my brace' ha ha! But just in case keep I bottle of water handy and swill your mouth before swallowing and 9 times out of 10 it'll get rid of any little morsels of food that are stuck! Anyway good luck, have enjoyed reading your posts, they are really detailed with all your thoughts and stuff, really cute! Bye for now x

Thanks so much for your post!! I'm going to have to go see if I can find your story and read through it! I am sooo looking forward to when I see real changes, which I'm sure by the 8 month mark you've seen tons of progress. I'm convinced that my lower arch is straightening out, which is awesome because it's pretty crowded :? I have some very irritating coils on the bottom right now since my first premolars on both sides are tilted in a lot and the arch wire wouldn't go into those brackets yet. I have my first adjustment in about 6 weeks and I'm PRAYING that things have moved enough that they can take the coils out and just use a regular arch wire across the whole bottom, although at this point I don't know how all of those teeth are going to fit in there! lol I'm including my 15 day pics so people can take a look and let me know if they see any movement....even if it's just a tiny bit I'll be happy!!

Comparing Day 1 to Day 15

So the previous pics I posted came out huge lol so I thought I'd post them again at a more normal size and also post my Day 1 photos so it's easier to compare.

1 month 2 day pics

#21 Post by stepher7 »

Here are my latest pics, 1 month 2 days in. It looks like there are too many teeth on the bottom, but my ortho didn't say anything about extractions so I guess I'll just have to trust that they'll all spread out and fit in there! lol

The 1 month pics aren't as good as the Day 1 pics, but it still works ok to see the progress. I just wish they'd all hurry up and get straight, but I guess it doesn't happen overnight!

I think you've had great progress!!!

I am curious though.. do you know why they put the brackets on your top teeth, so close to your gums? Was that intentional?

I'm not really sure! When I had them put on I didn't think to ask questions like that, so I'll definitely ask at my first adjustment. I think I've read other people saying that where they put the bracket makes the tooth either come out of the gums more or go into the gums more, so perhaps I have some teeth that need to come down a bit? Or vice versa? Not really sure, but they took their time putting them on there so it must have been intentional! I have another month until my first appointment so I won't really know until then, unless I Google it but that sometimes brings up scary info that I wish I hadn't seen lol I'm definitely seeing progress too, and it's only been just over a month, so I'm excited to see what the next few months brings!

Almost 1 1/2 months in!

#24 Post by stepher7 »

I decided I'd do a little update here, just in case anyone is following my story!

I'm almost a month and a half in, and I honestly could not be more excited with the progress that I've made so far. It's so encouraging looking at my day 1 pics compared to now. Everything seems so much straighter already and my bottoms are really widening out. I also feel as if my canines on the top look less "vampirish" than I felt they did before. Probably a combination of their movement along with all of the teeth around them moving. I'm also getting excited for when things are straight enough to be filed. I'm really noticing how uneven the tops of my bottom teeth are, and a few teeth on the top need some filing as well. My first adjustment is on May 9, so about 3 weeks, and I'm excited to see what they say about my progress, especially since I'll be another 3 weeks in by then. I'm pretty sure the coils won't be coming out at the first adjustment, it doesn't seem the archwire would be able to reach the brackets on those tilted bicuspids just yet, so I think those little babies will need more time to do their thing. I'm also finding that I'm feeling more comfortable and confident with the braces. Ever since they've gone on I've been trying not to show them off AT ALL, including talking, which is probably idiotic because people have commented "Oh, when did you get braces?" so I know that they're noticeable, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to flash them around. Now that I'm seeing what a change they're making, I don't mind as much to smile and show them and I find I'm not really worrying about them showing when I talk. They're going to be with me for a good while, so I might as well just accept it, right?? Anyway, I took some more pictures today but I don't think they're too different from my 1 Month 2 Days pictures, so I'll wait until my first adjustment to post new pics.

Hey thanks for coming over to my thread. Ur pics really show such quick progress!
The first few months are the most painful, but also the most exciting coz they move so much. You'll be amazed at how your arches will round out without you noticing!

Thanks msbee! I am excited every day to look at them lol although they still have a long way to go I can notice and feel a big difference already. I'm feeling more confident about smiling with them now since my top is straightening (just that one stubborn tooth!) but I also find that I'm now obsessed with checking out other people's teeth! haha I don't ever comment on them, but I definitely notice teeth so much more now. From what I've read on here this is normal, so I don't think I'd consider myself a fetishist or anything lol

First cleaning with braces was a success!

#27 Post by stepher7 »

Well, I had my first cleaning with braces yesterday. I was a little worried because I wasn't sure how they could get around everything without it being uncomfortable for me, but the hygienist was great and it was quick and painless! My first adjustment is in about a week and a half and I'm really looking forward to seeing what gets done at that first appointment. No issues to report these days, my mouth is a little sore here and there but it keeps changing every day so I'm just kind of learning to put up with it lol

Did they take your wire out for the cleaning? Just curious.. my ortho did that, but it was a pain for me.. having 3 appointments in one day just for the cleaning. But, the hygienist thanked me for it. ... plus, it felt nice not to have the wire in! :)

Nope, the wire stayed in! I had read on other people's threads that they had to go to the ortho to have the wire removed, go get the cleaning then go back to the ortho to have the wire put back in. WHEW!! I can't imagine all of that in one day lol the hygienist who did my cleaning just went around the wire and used the super floss with the stiff end for the flossing part. It probably just depends on what your dentist prefers, and my braces are self-ligating so maybe it's easier to clean around them than it would be to clean around braces with ligatures?

That's cool :) The dentists can do either way.. probably up to your ortho if they want to take the wire out and all.. and if you want to deal with all those appts.
