Here is a pic of my smile. As you can see, it is very gummy so I was told that I am getting it moved up by 6-7mm.

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Romancommander, I think we are having pretty much the same surgery done! I will also be having lefort 1, 5-6 mm. I will get my exact details the 10th. of May. I'm so excited you are a week ahead of me, than you can keep me posted on what to expect!
Are you guys nervous? I'm sort of excited, not yet very nervous, but worried I might get really scared just ahead of the surgery. I don't think I've really realized that it is only 3 weeks until my surgery.
I live by myself, but I'm going to spend a couple/few weeks at my parents place. I'm planning to be there the week before surgery, and as long as I feel necessary after surgery. They are going to take a few days off work so they can take care of me once I come home from the hospital.
I was told that it's common to spend two nights at the hospital after the kind of surgery I'll be having. I'm operated Monday, which means I'll probably go home at Wednesday.
How long are you expecting to be at the hospital?
Keep posting, We're in this together!

Oh ok! I had Dr. Caminiti from Richmond Hill/Toronto do my surgery. The actual surgery was performed in Scarborough though. Good luck! I'm sure everything will be fine. The hospital stay for me went well. Everything's gone great actually! The first 5-6 days were horrible but then it all goes uphill from there!romancommander wrote: Peter Hodgson is doing my surgery. He's actually in Mississauga, not Toronto. I am just getting le fort 1 impaction. Hoping it goes smoothly.

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this blog site but I too am having SARPE surgery. Mine is scheduled for May 23rd and I'm feeling pretty bittersweet about the whole situation. I'm 23 years old and a senior in college. While I'm worried about the pain and recovery time, I'm mostly feeling insecure about how I'm going to look initially and in the months following the surgery.
I've always had a narrow jaw, in fact when I was in 4th grade, the dentist pulled 4 of my teeth to make room for my adult teeth. After they did that, I saw an orthodontist and had braces put on for 4 years. When I got them off in 8th grade, my teeth stayed straight for about a year and then they began to move. Now, almost 10 years later, I'm dealing with worse crowding on both the top and the bottom than I had initially prior to braces.
About 2 years ago, I finally got the guts to go see a different orthodontist in hopes that I could find some kind of quick fix. At most, I expected them to tell me I needed braces again, but I had no idea what news was actually waiting for me. After speaking with my new orthodontist, I found out that the doctor who had done my braces the first time has several lawsuits against him for misdiagnosing patients and putting braces on their teeth instead of properly treating them with palate expanders or other devices that they required.
In my case, I should have had a palate expander to fix my narrow upper jaw. However, my old doctor put braces on for 4 years instead to mask the problem. Long story short, here I am at 23 years old with a mouth full of crooked teeth and now facing surgery, a palate expander and braces for two years. Needless to say, I'm a slightly bitter that I have to go through a process like this when the problem should've been fixed years ago.
Despite it all, I'm trying to find the light at the end of the tunnel and try and remain positive. My spacers are scheduled to be put in on Monday, then bands and impressions the following week, then the palate expander and finally the surgery. I'm going to be completely honest, I'm petrified so if anyone has any advice or encouraging words that have helped you with this process, it would mean the world if you shared them with me. I have to say, it's incredibly reassuring to know that there are other people out there going through the same thing as me. I wish you all the best of luck.

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
17 more days for me! I am gummier than u, romancommander, but i'm being told i'm only being impacted 4-5mm. I am a woman though so its more common to leave usa little gummier I guess. That's fine with me because i've grown accustomed to it. I'm also having my lower jaw moved forward 4-5mm, anda genioplasty. I'm a 32 yr old female, in really good shape, so hoping I bounce back quickly.
I am having emotional ups and downs though. One day I am anxious, next i'm terrified. I'm expecting the worse, but hoping for the best!

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
I hope everyone's surgery goes well!
I expect myself to be terrified the day of/day before the surgery, but right now I am pretty relaxed. I am a little concerned about the breathing problems some people have noted on this board but I'll get through it...
Props to everyone getting double jaw surgery. You are all real troopers!
Nice, I will let you know how it goes! I am getting it done mostly b/c of cosmetic reasons. I supposedly also have a short upper lip and an "animated" smile so I will still have a few mm of gum showing after. I was told that if I moved it up any more than 6-7mm it wouldnt look normal if I have my mouth open (yawning or whatever) because any more than 6-7mm would mean that I wouldnt show my teeth with my mouth open. With 6-7mm it will show 1mm of tooth with my mouth open (but not smiling) and the full tooth and 1-2mm of gum when smiling.Romancommander, I think we are having pretty much the same surgery done! I will also be having lefort 1, 5-6 mm. I will get my exact details the 10th. of May. I'm so excited you are a week ahead of me, than you can keep me posted on what to expect!

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
I will be having my pre-surgical consult on Thursday. I'll be taking in my molds. Would this be the appointment when all the measurements are taken?
Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Has anyone had their surgical hooks put on yet?
Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
I had mine put on last Wednesday, 17 hooks in total. It is more difficult brushing my teeth, I tend to do it for even longer now but I haven't had any other problems. I would of thought my mouth area might get caught up on the hooks but they haven't.aussiere wrote:Has anyone had their surgical hooks put on yet?

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
My op date is 11th may, though my final appointment was cancelled so not entirely sure it'll be happening on this date! Hard to get excited when my op may or may not be in 2 weeks.
I'm having upper & lower jaw surgery for my underbite and gummy smile, possibly genioplasty too. As I've not had my final appointment I don't know how much they're planning to move things but my underbite is more than 1cm thanks to my braces.
I've had surgical braces on for a few weeks now, they're OK. Pain for getting food stuck in them and front ones require a bit of wax to stop them rubbing but not bad at all, though I was surprised by how many they put in!
Does everyone have loads of supplies ready post op? Because I had the final appointment with the surgeon cancelled I haven't been given a list of things to get so any help much appreciated!
Think my problems with appointments are down to the NHS as I'm in the UK. Where are the other may people from and how old are you etc? I'm a 29yr old girl.
Does anyone have any pics etc pre op? Might post mine on facebook and send the link. It was the awful x-rays post braces that really made me want to do it - worse than any photographs!

Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
Wow, that is a lot of hooks. My orthodontist today put 8 on today. Do they put more hooks on for certain procedures?I had mine put on last Wednesday, 17 hooks in total.
Re: MAY 2011 BUDDIES!!!!
I reckon so. I have a overbite so my surgeon is going to move my upper jaw backwards and upwards (not sure on the measurements). It is very likely that my bottom jaw will be moved forward a little too. Staying in hospital for two nights post surgery and a night prior to surgery (not happy about that!). Can not wait to get the other side of surgery and begin the recovery.romancommander wrote:Wow, that is a lot of hooks. My orthodontist today put 8 on today. Romancommander, we have surgery on the same date and hopefully our recovery will be similar. It is really good to have the support of this fourm. I am dreading the first week post surgery and how bad the swelling is going to be. I had SARPE three years ago on the date of my surgery and my swelling was bad for that but it went down quite quickly - hopefully same story will happen now.

I am 23 and getting mine done on the NHS. I have had my final moulds done, had my hooks put on, got my final appointment next week to finalise everything and to take blood test etc. My surgery is the 10th May but I have to go into hospital a night before my surgery, is this the case for you too?neens wrote:My op date is 11th may, though my final appointment was cancelled so not entirely sure it'll be happening on this date! Worried about getting a cancellation now... that said it is pretty unlikely but you never know.
