Just broke a brace...

#1 Post by Rigby »

Hi gang,

I just somehow managed to break one of my back braces and now it's still on the wire but isn't stuck to the tooth any more. It's kind of rotated no and the flat metal side is pointing outward which is annoying cause it's poking me in the cheek but it's not that painful.

Obviously I'll ring my ortho as soon as I can but it's sunday afternoon so I can't get in contact with them till tomorrow morning so I just have a few quick questions:

Is it ok to eat with the broken brace there?

Am I in any danger of swallowing the brace? It's metal and pretty big so I'd hope not.

Is there anything I should be doing in the meantime?

Thanks, help means a lot. :)

Broke a brace..i imagine that means the bracket popped off, bracket being the tiny metal square thing that is attached to your tooth. If that is the case, best thing is to cover the bracket and hold it in place with dental wax.

And yes it is ok to eat with it, and as long as the bracket is still attached to the wire there is no danger for you to swallow it (but as i said above, just in case cover it with wax). But even so, brackets are made so even if you do happen to swallow one, you won't be in any danger. Or so i was told.

Hi there,

I also think that the bracket has popped off! I have broken my brace too many times to mention (eating all the naughty things) and carried on eating as usual believing that the wire would hopefully keep me from losing it. Go see your ortho ASAP and in the meantime pop a blob of wax over it to stop it annoying you.

Good luck
