Julia's Braces Saga

#1 Post by Julia221 »

Hello, everyone! I've been reading the stories on this board over the past month, trying to decide whether or not I wanted to share my own. Well, here's me, taking the plunge!
I went to a new dentist about two months ago because I needed a cleaning and my old dentist... well, lets just say he wasn't exactly the friendliest person in town. My new dentist, however, has patients drive from miles around just to see him, so I figured he was worth a try. The number one indicator that I knew I was going to like him was a question on his new-patient forms: "What would you most like to change, if anything, about your smile?" Well, I've known since I was a kid exactly what my answer to that question is. I have always had a severe overbite and gaps between my top teeth. And I told him so!
The dentist recommended I schedule a consultation with an orthodontist in town, only a few blocks away. I called as soon as I left the office and had an appointment for the following Tuesday. I couldn't have been happier with both my new dentist and ortho. They are both such awesome, understanding, and helpful people (as well as their staffs).
At the ortho appointment, it was discovered and explained to me that my "severe overbite" was in fact off by an entire tooth width (!) and was causing all sorts of other problems (namely, headaches because I'm also a grinder and my bottom teeth cutting into my palate when my mouth is closed). The ortho discussed several options with me, one being a surgical re-alignment of my lower jaw to make it match my upper. This is what the ortho I had visited as a kid had suggested as well, but my mom thought it was a lot of trauma to put me through at such a young age, so we never went through with it. I must admit, I was a more than a bit scared at the notion of having my jaw cut and plated back together. (And then having braces afterward for two years anyway!)
The second option, which I ended up going with, is to use braces to move my top teeth back to match my lower jaw. This approach is much less invasive, but does not produce the most desired facial profile. As facial profile is NOT my main concern, I decided I'd rather go with braces straight off.

I'm not a putzer, so we got right to work. At the very same appointment, the ortho went ahead and put some spacers (ouch!) in front of my back molars on top so that I could have a cross-palatal arch to stabilize my back teeth as everything else moves around. At the next appointment (a week later) I was fitted for said arch and had impressions taken of my teeth. A day before my third ortho appointment (one week after impressions) I went in to the dentist for a quick filling. The dentist's staff was amazed that I had moved things along so quickly, and were all so very happy for me!

So a mere three weeks after my latest dental cleaning, I found myself sitting in the ortho's chair, having braces bonded to my teeth (metal uppers and lowers 'cause I just think they're so cute and shiny) thinking to myself "Oh lord, what am I DOING???" But my lovely husband was there with me the whole time, reassuring me how gorgeous I look with the brackets on.

It also turns out that I have wide teeth, and there wouldn't be a lot of room for them to fit in once everything was pulled back to where it should be. So yesterday, after having the braces on for exactly three weeks, I had four (yep, four!) teeth extracted. I felt a bit timid about the idea at first, but was reassured by my dentist and another ortho friend of mine that it sounded like exactly what would be appropriate. What an ordeal! First, I went to the ortho's office to have my archwires removed. Then, to the dentist's office for the extractions (which wouldn't have been so bad except that the sedation didn't work on me... who knew?) so I was numb but awake through the whole procedure. Whew! Then, immediately back to the ortho's office to have arch wires re-inserted. Needless to say, my poor mouth was a bit sore when the numbness wore off. On the bright side, I got to spend a whole day off work and at home being pampered by aforementioned sweet husband.

Now I am awaiting the next step in the process, and already enjoying seeing teeth moving around and getting to where they should be! I just have to deal with these gaps for a few weeks and I'll be on my way to beautiful, straight teeth in no time!

I'm having progress pictures done once a month, and will post the first of them as soon as I remember to load them off my camera!

:) (on my way to :D )

Congrats on taking the plunge! You're lucky that everything moved so quickly, less time to second guess your decision lol you'll be amazed at how your teeth change. Make sure to keep up on those progress pics, they'll keep you motivated at times when you feel like braces aren't worth the hassle. Keep us posted on your progress!

Congrats on taking the plunge and just diving in the deep end. I like it when people don't dawdle and just move along. I dove in myself in January. I had to get a tooth pulled and then did the impressions. I went with Invisalign, so the waiting was the worst part for me. I'm in for 18 months. How long for you?

I hope the one that had the recent filling wasn't one of the 4 that was pulled. :GapToothed:

stepher7, thanks for the encouraging words. I'll post pictures soon!

45wantsnicesmile, I've been told 2 full years, but may be shorter depending on how everything progresses. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Kipepeo, you have no idea how many times I double-checked before we went through the filling process. I wanted to make extra sure I wasn't paying for something that would just get yanked out of my mouth in the end! LOL!

Everything is feeling better today. One of the extraction sites is a little more sore than the others, but they all seem to be healing well. Brushing and flossing is a pain! Hopefully after the weekend, things will feel much better.

In the mean time, I'm eating a LOT of mashed potatoes and macaroni (luckily, two of my favorite things to eat!).

Good luck Julia! Sounds like a lot of work, how are you holding up pain wise? I'm being a big sissy and admit it freely and I didn't even have extractions. I already had a molar extracted a couple years ago and never thought that would end up being a bonus for me! Funny how things can work out.

Have you thought about getting a Waterpik? I also have better luck manipulating the interdental brushes by Gum but I'm sure we should be finagling with the floss, too.

So far, the pain has not been so bad. I honestly think dealing with the spacers before the braces went on was the worst part. On the other hand, I'm sure I'd be in much more pain right this minute (from the extractions) if not for some serious pain meds!

I hadn't thought about a Waterpik, but so far I've muscled through with threader floss. I'm getting better at it. Right after the braces went on, I would think to myself "Is it always going to take me half an hour to brush and floss?!?!" And yes, I use the interdental Gum brushes as well. They work wonders in those tiny spaces around the brackets, too!

A funny tidbit story: I do vaguely remember waking up on the couch on Wednesday afternoon, about two hours after arriving home after the extractions, sitting up, and yelling incoherently for my husband. He wasn't there, and I remember feeling, briefly, VERY angry and betrayed. Then was immediately asleep again. He got home a few minutes later, waking me by dangling the white paper bag holding my prescription in front of my face. Boy oh boy, I couldn't tear into that bag fast enough! Poor guy caught the brunt of my bad mood (side effect of all the medications running through my system, I say). He's a trooper, though. Doesn't let it get to him.

I felt well enough last night to accompany my husband and daughter to the circus, though very tired when we finally got home. And this afternoon, we're taking a relaxing weekend trip to the beach. I can think of nothing better to help me recuperate than lying on the beach watching my family play in the water and sand. Oh wait, yes I can... a cheeseburger. Oh how I wish I could eat a cheeseburger right now.

I got through the weekend at the beach without much to complain about! Well... other than waking up convinced my husband had punched me in the jaw during the night. Nope, just sore!

And sunburned! Oops! Should've used more sunscreen!

On a related note, has anyone had experience with sutures in the gums? It's only been five days, and the dentist said the sutures would dissolve, but it seems like they're coming "untied" and falling out that way. It kinda freaks me out a little.

I'm going tomorrow morning to have a wire clipped, then not back again until August 8th! Part of me feels like I should be having appointments on a weekly basis. Maybe I'm just craving the attention!

I think it's normal for stitches to do that. I had gum surgery earlier this year and my mouth was FULL of stitches, both dissolvable and not, and I found that some of the stitches seemed to be coming loose, or untied like you said. I think it's just the natural way that your body is rejecting something foreign lol and I also think it's normal to have appointments so far apart, that's how it appears to be based on everyone's posts and my own experience. I got my braces put on March 7 and my first appointment wasn't until May 9, next one is June 29. Sometimes I wish I had them closer together too just so I would feel better about knowing if some of the things happening to my teeth are normal or not! Hang in there, it gets easier every day, I promise!!

This morning's appointment yielded another funny story. I called the office yesterday to see if I could just go in and have a wire clipped. (It was poking out the back about 1/4 inch.) I got there this morning and the ortho saw me, which I thought was a little strange. Usually it's an assistant or someone who does the routine stuff. So she looked in, clipped the stray wire immediately, then sort of paused for a minute and checked her monitor for notes about my appointment. Then she said, "Wait, this isn't your next appointment. What's going on? Why are you here?" I told her that mostly I just wanted to get the stray wire clipped, and partly I wanted some reassurance that everything was fine. So she sort of chuckled a bit, relieved that she wasn't losing her mind and that it hadn't been time for my routine adjustment. She's just recently opened a second office (closer to my home!), and is a bit overwhelmed running back and forth between the two. THEN she said that since she was already in there, she might as well go ahead and put on TWO STEEL LIGATURES to, in her words, "remind the canines what their job is." OUCH! I felt the pull immediately! I'm still feeling it. It's a good feeling, though, because I get the sense that things are stable in there now. I had been feeling weirdly insecure about the spaces left by the extractions. These ligatures are supposed to help them close up faster and straighter. Right???

On a side note, I really do love my ortho. She's awesome. It's like visiting with a friend who happens to work on your teeth while you're there.

Yeeeow!
I went to the orthodontist yesterday for my routine adjustment. I had my old wires removed and got tandem wires on top and bottom. Wow! What a difference sixteen hours and tandem wires make! My front two teeth are almost touching! Amazing!
I also got rubber bands to begin correcting my bite. This is a new experience for me. I feel like the teeth they're hooked to are being pulled out!

I'm sure the pain will not last long, but it was not an easy night for me. I clinch my teeth when I sleep, and that was quite painful at about 1 am!

Thanks for the continued encouragement. I do have pictures, I promise! And they will be uploaded soon!

I've got a two-month picture and am about to take a three-month picture, so I'll post them soon as well. I'm just slow!
