Swelling is down a small bit, but still very noticeable. I think my upper lip got even more swollen, or at least it's more stiff than it was day 1. It may be because I've been drinking a lot of orange juice and the acidity is messing with it. The pain hasn't gotten any better. I've been getting headaches that I think I'm getting because of the pressure of biting down on my splint.

Encountered my first breathing complications last night. I could only breathe through one nostril and I was too paranoid to fall back asleep for a while. Neighbors partied from 6pm to midnight, so I spent 6 hours trying to nap.
Aw dexter, glad you're swelling has started to reduce, thats what I am worrying about at the moment, as although I only had lower jaw surgery, it is massive! Maybe because of the genio aswell... I look like an egg head! I know what you mean about neighbours - the lady next to me on my ward had very rude visitors who spoke incredibly loudly for a very long time, even though two of us had only just come back from surgery. It was actually like a form of torture, being so knocked out yet having someone in your ear so you can't sleep properly grrrr. She then went on the say to the nurses "well, I'm only here because they had no other beds on the other wards, I've had an operation you see on my leg"!!! Thankfully, the nurse replies that, actually, the ward was full of other poeple who had had operations...
Okay. Rant over!

Its comforting to hear everyones post op stories, nothing too extreme.

dexter7188, danoobsminion im guessing your swelling is well on its way down,

annafaith, only another day and your swelling will also be heading south, hang in there.

for those with nausia, which seems to be most, i know this isnt a nice topic, but how do you go about being physically sick with you jaw having faced so much trauma from the surgery?

The post-surgery nausea was by far the worst part of this entire process for me. I guess I had just swallowed so much blood from the surgery that my stomach wanted to throw it up throughout the night. I thought it was going to be a 1 time thing, but I ended up throwing up pretty much all night. The nurse was worthless and decided to throw more pain meds at me, which obviously didn't do any good. I felt so sick that my jaw didn't even hurt that badly.

The nausea was also the worst part for me. The day I came round from surgery, the nursing care was poor. I was left without any painkillers for about 4-5 hours, and also no drip, even though I couldn't keep down water. Because I was constantly being sick I couldn't eat either, so the blood really irritated my stomach, and the anti nausea meds didn't work. All in all not a great combination. I did find that laying still helped enormously, the only time i was sick was if i moved my head...

W0nnie - surprisingly, it didn't really affect my jaw - I tried to keep my jaw as still as possible when being sick which was quite easy, so luckily my jaw didn't interfere with being sick at all and certainly didn't cause it any extra pain. Also, because you havn't eaten anything for quite a few hours before surgery, nothing actually comes up apart from a bit of blood, so it's not like normal vomiting. Most of mine was just dry retching which was unpleasant but manageable. Sorry for all the details, but may as well say it like it is :)

Hey guys I had surgery on June 29th and it seems like the June buddies thread is dead :( . I hope you guys dont mind if i post here on the July buddies thread from now on since the majority of my recovery has been in July. I had lefort and bsso surgery at UCLA to correct a class III underbite. I agree with you guys with throwing up blood being the worst part. I threw up blood the first 2 days of recovery. I felt like i was choking! not a good feeling. Its now day 19 and most of the swelling has gone down. It seems like the last bit of swelling is slowly going to fade away. At my first post up appointment, which was last monday, my surgeon said everything looked very good and that everything was healing properly. That was definitely good news. The only thing that has got me worried is if a fibrous union were to occur. I dont know sometimes i just think my jaw is going to move out of place and disconnect. The bones should already be fusing together right? Does talking or coughing increase the chances of the bones snapping off one another? Maybe i just think about things too much. For those of you in the first few days of healing, hang in there! it only gets better.

Hi Ramirez, you are very welcome here. I'm on day 2, and I think the swelling has got slightly worse overnight. Still, managed to shower and move around a bit, and managed yoghurt for breakfast, so not too bad. I also keep thinking about my jaw and chin moving out of place. I am constantly in a jaw sling with ice packs to help the swelling, and hope they don't put pressure on the jaw in any way :? What is a fibrous union btw?

Hey there anna still up i see! Day 2 was definitely the worst for me. I only managed to sleep an hour that night. The swelling is normal and peaks at day 3-4. From what i have read, a fibrous union is when your bones dont fuse together properly. Ive read some cases where this happens and the jaws become mobile. Sounds scary!

So good to hear from all of you who have had surgery. And yes, Ramirez, just like Anna said you are welcome to this thread :)

Sounds like vomiting and swelling are the far worst parts then for post-op. I haven't really heard a lot of complaints about pain. I'm going in tomorrow for surgery. Please pray for me so that all may go well. Thank you :P

It's so good to hear that everyone's surgeries have gone well and that you've made it to the early "hell" of healing!!! I'll be there soon :) . Annafaith that story about that obnoxious woman was so funny. I'm glad the nurse put her in her place. Hope to hear more good things and good luck in the early post-op recovery time!

Day 5 now here. Swelling was bad when I woke up, but got considerably better throughout the day. Still have that chipmunk look, but it's getting a little better. It's a little disheartening not being able to see my results, but immediate gratification is never as satisfying :D. The pain and discomfort is pretty low. I take my pain meds still, but a lower dose than before. I'm feeling pretty decent, but won't be going out soon or anything. Hope everyone is feeling better! Good luck to all going to surgery soon.

Day 3 - the swelling is starting to get me down today. I think I've reached the point where i'm questioning why I did this in the first place... the swelling is just so uncomfortable. Can't wait until is starts to reduce, although the doctor told me it will take at least 7 days to go down. I'm being optimistic and hoping it will start to go down in the next couple of days...
Good luck to everyone else in the next few days x

Question. It's been 6 days since the surgery and I haven't had any bowel movements since. Is that weird? I've also developed hemorrhoids on day 3, even though I've never attempted to nor felt the need to poop. I've been eating liquid mashed potatoes and drinking juices.

Dexter, I'm in the same boat. I guess we are eating dramatically less. Also, what pain meds are you on? Because a lot of them have this as a side effect. Drinking a lot of water is probably a good idea...

Anna, I'm taking liquid Hydrocodone for pain. And regarding your swelling, don't worry! It went down noticeably for me starting from day 4.

Day 6 update:
Swelling has gone down by quite a bit. Upper lip is still swollen/stiff. Still have a double chin. Still having headaches from the tension of the bands. I find that I am still dependent on the pain medication. I did not expect this process to hurt this much because I had a SARPE done back in January and I remember only taking like 3 Vicodin pills. I think I got hemorrhoids from the few days I spent sleeping in a sitting position. Honestly, they are starting to become more uncomfortable than my jaw. All in all, it's getting a little better everyday. I feel like I have enough energy to last the whole day now. Apparently, I get unbanded on Thursday and will be switched to removable elastics. If this cures the headaches, I will be very much satisfied. Does anyone know when we can start using a straw?
