SLIDING GENIOPLASTY REGRETS!!

#1 Post by hello123456 »

I had a sliding genioplasty done3 months ago and I am so devastated by the results. I want to look exactly the same as how I looked prior to surgery, is it possible I will look the same or will I look even worse?? Please anyone with this experience reply to this posts as I am so depressed! I cannot recognize myself anymore and I feel l look as if I aged and my neck is no longer tight and firm, it is now sagging and I have this double chin which I never had before surgery. And I am a skinny person. Also my chin looks stuck on and it becomes more prominent when the light hits my face and it looks like it is bulging out of my face plus it has made my face look long and my lower face look huge!!!!

I'm so sorry you're unhappy. I assume you had your chin moved backwards. Have you talked with your surgeon about it? I think it's possible and fairly easy to make changes to the chin. It's nothing like upper/lower jaw surgery.

No my chin was NOT moved backwards but rather forward since I only wanted a little projection. Now my face is long and I have a notch on the right side of my chin. Plus I have a double chin, my chin to neck ratio is so close together so even when I put my head down I get a double chin. I never had this before surgery.
No I haven't but I already told him on my 7th week post op appointment that I didn't like the outcome. And he told me to wait a few more months and it has now been 3 months. I made an appointment to see him next week and hopefully he will address my concerns and have a solution.

Can you post a before/after picture? It would help us fully understand the issues you're describing.

Yes, a picture would be helpful. From my understanding, the opposite of the results you describe should be the norm so I'm a bit confused. Maybe someone more experienced can enlighten us?

the above picture is with my mouth closed (sorry for my own personal privacy I will only show my chin) Notice how my chin is bulging out of my face. I am not fat at all, I barely have fat in my body.

The double chin doesn't look as bad there but trust me in person it is alot worse! I actually get stared at cuz my chin has an odd shape to it. And my family agrees with me. But I will take more pictures tomorrow of the double chin and post it. Also with the notch/step off on the right side of my chin.

i had a double chin before surgery but after i had the genioplasty it was gone. i never heard of a genioplasty causing a double chin. did you recently gain weight or something. that could be the reason.

even though those photos dont show you good enough, i dont see anything wrong with your chin. i know some people who got a genioplasty didnt like thier results either and had it reverse. i had a genioplasty also and didnt like the results too much the first couple of months but now i do, i guess i judged too early. maybe you should wait a few more months to see how it looks then.

In person it is alot of worse since in pictures you are only seeing a flat picture, no dimension. And no I didn't gain any weight I actually lost weight from being 5'4, 115 pounds. But did you experience the same things I did in regards to the longer face, protruding chin, double chin, step off? And when were you happy with your results because when I look in the mirror and the lights are flashing down on my face, my chin is very prominent!! It looks odd and weird!!

Also before surgery I never had a double chin. I have been researching and there are doctors that say it is because the mentalis muscles weren't reattached properly so now it sags which causes a double chin and the neck muscles are bulging out. So I need to know how to fix this

It's really hard to tell from those pictures when you literally only show your chin.

I had a sliding genio years ago and didn't have any of the problems you're talking about. It's possible your doctor did something wrong and if he doesn't acknowledge your concerns, consult with another surgeon.

I understand what you're saying. the same thing happened to me. Except mine is much more crooked. I had an underbite and so my jaw was moved backward, but Dr O'Ryan slipped the chin forward, but must've slipped it forward at an angle, cause it looks lopsided. Also, I have an a flat arthritic left TMJ, which the surgeon didn't check my TMJs prior to surgery as a source of the crossbite. So because the foundation was already off, the enhancement of the chin made it especially apparent. Did you get your TMJs xrayed prior to surgery? Maybe you have a problem with one and it contributed to the lopsided appearance. I'm 12 years out of surgery and am finally looking to go back and get it fixed just now. Life tends to be a priority when education, marriage, children, and work is all involved. So, if you don't have any of that to worry about I would encourage you to have a revision asap. Another big prob I've run into is the cost. @$12,000 and insurance doesn't cover it. Good luck.

You need to give it some time. It could take up to 6 months or more for all the swelling and the healing to be 100%. I remember I was very depressed when I had my mandible setback and sliding genioplasty. I didn't recognize the person and combined with the post op anasthesia, I was not a happy camper. About 6 months in I was ecstatic, and 3 years later, today, I never regret what I did.

Hi, I had a sliding genioplasty a year ago, and just like the topic creator, I'm very disappointed with the results. I too, have a "double chin" even though I'm not the least bit overweight and nor did I have one prior to the surgery. I haven't seen the surgeon since the surgery, but I plan on going back soon and getting it reversed.

Topic creator, what happened to you? Did the double chin ever go away? Did you get it reversed?

Hi FarewelltoArms.

I am saving up for a consult with Dr. Gunson in CA around the first of the year because I want to have sliding genioplasty. You say you now have a double chin due to the surgery. Can you please explain how this happens? I know they take a sliver of your jawbone and advance it down and foward to give a more pointy, narrow chin, and I can't understand how this contributes to getting a double chin. It looks like it would take it away. Not at all saying it didn't happen, just trying to understand all the potential complications and how they could apply to my situation since I am still in the planning phase and am still doing my research.

I appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge.--angela
