Today's the day - very nervous
Well, this is it - by 4.00pm today I will have a mouth FULL of ceramics, metal, bite plane and elastics.... joy of joys! Have spent hours reading people's stories on this forum and it has given me a lot of encourgement and a feeling of not being in this alone but am still scared witless!
I know from having the top braces on back in July (was it really that long ago??) that I'll feel really down for a few days, when the whole process just seems to much to get through but am trying to keep myself bouyed by the thought that the next 6 months will see a lot of movement and change and by the time it's over, I'll be about half way through the whole treatment...
Think I'll go out and treat myself to something lovely and very feminine after this afternoon because I know I'll feel anything but by the time I walk out....
My work colleagues are being very supportive (!) telling me they won't laugh - much - so I'll have to put on a brave face tomorrow and just get through the awful talking part as best I can...
I know everyone says it, but this forum truly is brilliant for the wealth of information and support it offers... It's also brilliant at putting things into perspective, some people's journeys appear far more difficult than mine - and longer so I am clinging to small mercies!
Will update tomorrow once my new lodgers are in place...

Good luck! I hope they settle in very quickly and after your initial day back at work I'm sure they'll be old news. Definitely treat yourself to something nice x
Re: Today's the day - very nervous
Thanks seriousthinker! First day at work going ok, I'm sure they'll get fed up with teasing by the end of today...
Bite plane is a complete pain, speech all over the place and I can't even chew bread! Still, the good news was, I didn't have to have elastics yesterday - very grateful for the smallest of mercies! Am wishing the week away til I return to something resembling normality in the speaking and eating department.

Hi belistic10
Good luck to you! It's not easy but as everyone says, it's so worth it in the long run.
I am so glad I found this forum, it helped prepare me far better than my orthodontist ever could have for what was to come. One thing that is definitely worth remembering (which I didn't!!) is rinsing with salt water - your tongue will spend so long playing with the wires (even though you know you shouldn't!) that it will get so sore - salt water rinses are soooo good!

i absolutely hate doing it, but salt is pretty good at healing things! i was doing that to help heal my extraction sites

My day is next Thursday. One week! I am really excited but a little scared. I had braces as a kid but I didn't remember them hurting. Now I am thinking about that a lot. But I am ready. Openbite, crossbite and horrible TMJ... sooooo... I am ready! Fingers crossed!!!!

You can do it! Don't give up and keep perspective. This is a short time of yuck--when it's done you'll feel AWESOME. And so will I.
We're all in this together.

Hi belistic10 (my forum name came from a poster I bought at the Vatican years ago and I just loved it!)/OctoCat/BrAcEfAcE4547
The only pain I have at the moment (which I'm about to contact the ortho about) is on one side of my tongue which just rubs against the wire on the bite plane ALL THE TIME!!!!
, even when I drink or rinse with salt water! So am not a very happy bunny! Other than that, things are returning to normal really quickly. Apart from a lisp, my speech is getting there. My lower braces (metal) have been easier to get used to than the top (ceramic), whether that's because I have so much else going on in my mouth, I don't know. All I've needed so far is a little wax to ease a bit of rubbing.
Day 3 and the bite plane feels smaller in my mouth already so that's really good.
As for eating..... hmmmmm, let's just say a bite plane takes all the enjoyment out of eating for a while! The sensation is really not pleasant and it's so hard to find anywhere to bite anything... Am on a steady diet of soup, yoghurt and mushy food. Can't even eat chocolate which is the pits, but I'll persevere!
The first few days of any new apparatus and after adjustments are definitely the worst but in the grand scheme of things, bearable and a sense of humour is sometimes the best painkiller!
Good luck to those of you about to get braced - as Otocat so rightly says, we're in this together!

Re: Today's the day - very nervous
ouch i hope they figure out how to ease the pain on your tongue! i sure hope i dont need a bite plane! they dont sound like much fun! but i am sure none of it is
thats great you are keeping a sense of humour about it, i hope i can be that strong, but i can guarantee i will be crying at some point
i can be a bit of a sook yet have a high pain threshold too so i dont know how that really works
so glad i have all you nice people to share things with too, i love that we are all in it together
somehow it makes it feel better
fingers crossed you can get a bit of pain relief soon!

Re: Today's the day - very nervous
I thought I'd end up in tears but so far have managed not to give in. Although the morning after having the plane fitted I almost gave in to a bout of self pity then reminded myself that I put myself up for this! That's not to say that I don't get moments when I'd sooner not have any of this rubbish in my mouth, especially when my husband's tucking into a steak and I'm having to eat mush at the moment!
I'm going back to the ortho on Monday to get this rubbing sorted out, in the meantime they are sending me something "gunky" to put on the wire to keep me going over the weekend - roll on the post arriving tomorrow! I can't get the normal wax to stay on, no matter how dry I get the wire...
