I didn't know this would happen

So today I had my 4 extractions done. When I got back to the area and the oral dentist came and sat down, my eyes started to water. Now I had come to terms a while ago with getting teeth pulled for this. We talked for a moment and then I was ready to go. When he numbed me, little tears started to fall. When the first tooth came out, the tears really started falling. Then I pulled myself together and was good....until I looked at the tray and saw all 4 of my teeth, then the crocodile tears came and I had to look away. I really didn't think this would affect me like that. I really thought I came to terms with this. I was emotional all the way home. No turning back now.

it will be ok :) the first steps are hard!! after i got my 4 extractions done i was miserable! in pain as i got drysocket in 3 of them, so the pain for me lasted a couple of weeks (i was just unlucky!) but really it does get better :) i have had the braces on for a month now and they dont really bother me much at all now. Getting the braces on was much easier and pleasant compared to the extractions so take a big breath you have got through the worst part. hang in there!

op oops you already have braces on? sorry. i think getting teeth out is worrying as we are trusting them to know what they are doing, and not knowing how our end result will be. i am trying not to dwell on that too much as i am just putting my trust in my ortho. hugs

It's emotional to get teeth pulled. I think it's the finality of it all that gets to us b/c you're right---there's no going back. I also got 4 teeth pulled and I managed to keep it together while at the oral surgeons' office but once I got home I lost it. I think it was the ordeal of the extractions, the fact the nitrous oxide did not agree with me, and the thought that I just got 4 healthy teeth removed. BUT. I will tell you this. It was the BEST decision I ever made and I'd do it again. So hang in there. Once those extraction gaps close and it all starts coming together you will be so happy you went through with it and think yourself ridiculous for crying over it.

That is exactly what I went through. I was so sad I was just looking at my poor teeth. They were one of the few straight ones I had adn they were good and healthy... then I willingly pulled them out... I was slightly depressed after all of that and wondering if I had made the right decision.

But now, five months later I'm looking at my teeth and it is amazing to me that they are straightening out. Now and then I do miss having those premolars but I realize that it's all for the better.

Thank you everyone. I guess it is apart of what we go through to perfect our smiles. I'm doing much better now. I just try not to stare too much when I look in the mirror or I get a lump in my stomach. :)

well think of it this way

some people (me) get told my their orthodontist that they need to get teeth pulled out so they do it.

then it turns out it wasn't necessary.

I'm sorry. Not to be rude. (And I really am sorry that your extractions were unnecessary). But I don't understand how knowing this helps soldiergirl. We're supposed to offer support not make each other basket cases!

I just got home from having four extractions, and hoping for a nice recovery. The scariest part was leaving with a large amount of heavy-duty ibuprofen from the dentist's office...they must know the first few days could be ugly. The dentist was able to pull two upper and two lower without cutting any wires, but I noticed that one is very bent upward (over the gap of the former tooth). I'll make a call to the ortho in the morning to get that fixed. Off to see how long it takes to get feeling back in my mouth!
