Yes the orthodontist would do exactly that in order to get maximum result of the jaw final position when they break the jaws.
If your underbite is simply dental which it sounds like it is because its definatly unnoticeable unless your teeth are showing. You should definatly NOT get surgery then. Esp because of that horrible high risk of nerve damage. Braces can work just fine with elastics
There is no age in which elastics stop working. Older people may need thicker ones to get those teeth that were done growing and aready in place to move.

Re: Unnoticed Underbite
Sorry to repost but these things are constantly in my mind all the time.
So my question is:
If you were in my situation and you cannot notice an underbite internally (smiling or showing bite) or externally (front and side profile) unless you bite down, would you want to undergo surgery to fix your profile so when you do bite down you look normal? Or is that silly and only done for those with actual health problems?

My answer is I would not undergo the surgery, I would just go for braces with elastics.

Opps just realised this doesn't make sense "(smiling or showing bite)" I meant "smiling or showing teeth without biting down" otherwise I don't ever have an existing underbite!
But thank you for your opinion

You're very welcome the tirgeminal nerve is a very important nerve it gives you feeling in lower jaws and tongue. If you have surgery it is high risk to damage that and you could be biting your tongue and not even know it.
