Question about SARPE
I just found this site a couple of days ago and REALLY wish I had discovered it before my last consult before my surgery. I will be having SARPE on 12/16. I'm really nervous about the clots properly forming and have read that a lot of people feel like they have a stuffy nose the first couple of nights after the surgery. I was wondering if breathing out of your mouth while sleeping cause snoring or if you snore will this disrupt the clots?

Re: Question about SARPE
You can always call up to talk to the nursey. If your really that scared you can tell your ortho and see if you could do an alternative.
To answer your question: I breathe through my mouth all the time and I am Quiet as a mouse, no snoring so I do not think you will have a problem.

I'll call them up this week to see. I'm really nervous because I run low/normal platelets, which just means I bleed a little more easily than most. I don't think there is an alternative. The oral surgeon wants to do both upper and lower surgery where as the ortho wants to try just the upper first and see if I can get by with that. I'm just going to have to suck it up and be tough.

Re: Question about SARPE
Hi,
I had sarpe a year ago and also have thrombocytopenia. I did have some blood running down the back of my throat for a few days, and nausea because of it, but nothing major, my biggest fear was nausea and there are amazing anti nausea meds out there nowadays. I was told this was entirely normal for the procedure. Dont forget if anything is bleeding a little too much during surgery, they can cauterize! The only difference with the procedure for me was they wouldn't give me the regular IV anti-inflammatory because of my chronic low platelets...

Re: Question about SARPE
You should definatly let them be aware of your bleeding issue. Sometimes if its really bad they won't do surgery because your life is more precious.

Re: Question about SARPE
Thrombocytopenia would show up on the blood tests they do prior to surgery, so they will know about it...
Re: Question about SARPE
Thanks everyone. I reminded the surgeon about the low platelets when I when I saw him and he did write it down. I know everything will be fine, I guess I'm just having per-surgery jitters. I just have to keep reminding myself how awesome it will be to have all my upper teeth fitting nicely in the roof of my mouth!
