Need info re bonded retainer

#1 Post by Huggypillow »

Ok so im a way off de bracing and im already excited about this forthcomming day, so i am already thinking about bonded retainers.

I like the idea of the flossable one so i have a few questions.

Are they ordered on request ?
They look more functional for flossing, so are they ?
Are they more pleasing to the tongue ?

Any other information would be appreciated, im very nervous about having a non flossable perm retainer. I would rather have 2 removeable, than fixed if i had the choice.

Has anyone had to specifically had to request one from their orthodontist ?.

Thanks in advance

what's your case exactly? is this for upper and lower? i have a lower retainer but am being pressured to get an upper too, which I don't want really. To me I don't get why they help if you have to wear a nightly retainer anyway. I don't see the benefit.

My otho said basically because my bottom teeth are so mangled that in order to keep them straight after the braces he will put a bonded retainer, But I would be happy to have removeable I will wear my retainers all the time.

Perhaps where teeth were the most affected by crowding is where the greatest possibility of re shifting will occur.

But i already have a major hassel with flossing with all this metal now ( but i stick to the routine) having a bonded retainer would be really stressful.

Have you looked into flossable retainer, i'm going to ask at my next appointment and i really really hope hes happy for me to have one. Fingers crossed.

What about you ?

Huggypillow,
did you get the flossable retainers? Do you like them?

I took the web site address into my dentist the last time I was in his office and asked him to look into them. He said he would but I busted to hear from someone who has them.

Anyone else have them too?

Thanks in advance ...

I hate to rain on the flossable retainer parade--they sound SO awesome, I know!--but I've got one, and it's not working out. I'm 40, and I got braces to close some minor spaces on the top and do some major movement on the bottom. I had a congenitally missing tooth on one side and over the years my midline had shifted a good quarter inch or so to the side. And there were plenty of smaller spaces as well. Anyway, the braces did a great job of aligning the teeth and getting the midline back where it was supposed to be after about a year of treatment. I went with a bonded, flossable retainer on the bottom--one of those wavy ones everyone's talking about. (My dentist JUST started doing them a few weeks before.) It's been about two months since the braces came off, and my lower teeth are starting to separate again--even WITH the permanent retainer. It's minor enough that you have to be looking for it to notice, but I've compared photos side by side and there's definitely been movement. I've got an appointment with the ortho in January and I'll post what he says.
