Pain Meds After Surgery

#1 Post by houseofcash »

This may be a silly question to some, and im sure this is a question i will ask my suergon when the time comes. I am just curious what type of pain meds where given after surgery? considering it would by very hard to swallow a pill?

The reason i also ask is because when having my wisdom teeth taken out i was precribed tylenol 3's (Which didnt do anything at all!) The suergon then sent me a script for Percocet, Which worked wonders for a few days. The problem was the Percocet made me have severe panic attacks (i had never had a panic attack till that moement) i stopped the percocet and tried to slug it out on my own.

After a day or 2 i couldnt bear the pain (was in pain for almost 2 weeks) and i tried another percocet which of course caused another panic attack. Since then (8 months) i have had a few more attacks while not taking anything at all (havent had any recently) but i now have this fear to take any pain medication and hope percocet is not the pain meds of choice after sugery.

thanks

Can't remember what they gave me in the hospital, I think morphine through IV than liquid form.. To take home was T3s in pill form. No issues swallowing them. Surprisingly the pain after surgery was tolerable. The first few days which you'll spend in the hospital are the worst. Overall not so bad.

I had liquid Percocet at home and Morphine through the IV in the hospital. I've seen others say they were given liquid Vicodin for at home use. I'm sure if you're wired or banded shut it will be liquid. I was banded, so no pills were going in. I'm pretty sure you can request liquid, as well and even tell them your concern with Percocet and they can be sure to give you something different.

There is another common oral opiate, Hydrocodone, that is an option. (Tylenol 3 uses Codeine, Percocet uses Oxycodone.)

I'm not sure what it was in the Percocet that triggered my panic attacks, but usally it started with a shortness in breath and then continued with an increased heart rate. Hopefully these other drugs you mentioned don't cause this effect. I couldn't imagine having a attack right after my surgery!

Thanks for the replies

I had a big bottle of liquid vicodin (hydrocodone) and if that's what you get... just a heads up that it tastes AWFUL! And if you have to do it via syringe like I did because I was banded shut, you can't just chug it to get it over with quickly. It took forever to get it down with the syringe.
