So I'm 6 days into being braced! I just found the Braces Stories section on this wonderful forum (been lurking for a few weeks to get as much info as possible before B-Day so thanks everyone!) and thought I'd start sharing my experience. I have full metal on the bottom and uppers to join in a few months
Since the bracing it's been pretty uneventful...I've been super lucky with not much pain except for the wire cutting up my cheek to bits...yeay wax! I've been completely staying away from solid foods though so maybe this is helping - I have molar build ups on one side and it took 45 minutes to eat a sandwich for lunch yestrday so think I'll give up on chewing until they're gone!
PS I'm 27 years old and super self conscious of my teeth...always have been and a bit more so with these beauties on...but I will say to anyone worried about getting them - I was out at a friend's 30th birthday 3 days after being braced and was so nervious of what people would say - but everyone was super nice about it. No-one really mentioned them until I had and then they just talked about how they didn't like they're own teeth! So don't worry about what people will think... just go for it!
hi there
thanks for sharing and well done on taking the plunge. wishing you all the best on your journey and looking forward to hearing about your progress and hopefully see some pics
Hi Elaine!!! Don't give up on chewing yet!! I don't have molar build ups but I have bite turbos behind my front teeth that serve the same purpose, to keep the molars from coming together, I'm now three weeks into this and I have figured out how to chew (mostly) and I haven't choked on unchewed food yet And believe it or not your mouth will quit being raw pretty soon hang in there!!
congratulations on getting braced!!
you have braces on the bottom now? and molar build ups? do you have an underbite? I have full metal braces tops and bottoms to fix my deepbite, and tmj symptoms. not to mention the crowding that I have on my lowers.
anyhoo welcome

BetsyBug – I think the molar build-ups are because my lower canine is so far out of line being a rebel that the upper canine actually sits into the middle of it...so it wouldn’t be able to move if my teeth were closed. Going to try pasta for lunch today so hopefully that won’t be too much of a struggle!
Got my waterpik last night...man those things are fun! Was a bit of a mess when i took it out of my mouth forgetting it was still on and soaked the bathroom...hopefully I’ll get used to it!
I’m going camping this weekend and I’m a little worried about my cleaning routine being completely disrupted...I guess I’ll just have to spend extra long w a torch and travel mirror trying to keep these baby’s gleaming! I’ll let you all know how my metal mouth wilderness excursion goes!
i can totally relate to your waterpik incident. i got mine on monday and the first night using it i made a right mess. the water was basically everywhere except in my mouth
I just ate a toasted sandwich like normal!!! Ok...I know that this may not sound like much of an achievement, but it was the first time that I didn't get completely bored of eating lunch because of how slowly it was going. Think I'm getting the hang of this chewing business!
I also survived a camping trip this weekend...which of course involved tons of junk food. I was kind of nervous because even with my best intentions, my cleaning routine was completely reduced to toothbrush, toothpaste and a bottle of water to rinse. Hardly the work to make cavities tremble! But I guess every once in a while shouldnt do too much damage (fingers crossed!).
Feeling a bit of pressure today which I'm excited about...I'm ready to see those little teeth move their butts!
I knew you would get the hang of chewing....LOL
seems like we can get used to all sorts of crazy things, and just go on with life. Just think how easy it will be with the turbos/molarbuild up are gone

haha, I think once in a while would be Ok. I'm sure most us have done it
Hey BetsyBug...thanks! Yeah I can't wait til they're gone...I mean they're not that big a deal but man I want a burger!!
EbonyQ - I've got molar buildups so kind of the same effect...they're going ok...although one of them came off when I was brushing the other night oops! Still got 2 out of 3 though so hopefully will be alright. Getting used to chewing...although its quite a sight but I keep trying new foods everyday! Although I was bold and had some popcorn last night - I was so worried the whole time that it just wasn't worth it
Well I had my two week brace-aversary yesterday...and it feels longer! I’m pretty used to my lower brace now, although I had a chicken korma yesterday and completely struggled...there was rice everywhere! Finally got to give my waterpik a challenge
My ortho’s office called on Tuesday to see how I was doing – how sweet! They’re so nice there. I said I had no pain or discomfort and was a little worried that nothing was happening, but she said not to worry each patient is different. I guess my teeth were listening in on the convo because that night...yowza! It hurt so bad to brush! And then my mouth and lips got super dry and my brackets just felt huge! It’s so funny though...even with the pain i was happier because with us brace faces - it really is no pain no gain!
I have seen zero movement which I’m a little bummed about – I know, only 2 weeks! Flossing is amazingly easier though...it used to be such a struggle to get the tiny floss between my cosy teeth but now it’s a breeze...so that must mean movement right? I’ll try to put up photos this weekend...it’s the long weekend so I have tons of time and no excuses...now all I need is guts!
I finally got around to figuring out how to do photos! So here is my first day with braces...
and here is after 1 month...before my adjustment today...
As you can see from my photos, I have 2 premolars fighting with each other for space in my mouth. These warring teeth meant that when i was initially braced, my ortho didn't put the lig on the 2nd premolar fully as it would just pop off and no-one wanted that. So when I went back for my first adjustment today I thought we'd just get that premolar fully on the brace train and bolt him up tight...little did I know!
I hop on into the chair and suddenly there is twisting and tightening going on all over my lower teeth...those plier/scissor things are turning 360's and there's calls for 2's and all sorts! It was all over in 10 minutes and then there was lots of tightness...then I look and I have a powerchain! Woohooo!! Seriously - I'm delighted! My poor 2nd premolar is still only half way in the party but my 1st premolar is definitely being shoved back into his rightful position! And this is only in the first few hours...I can't wait to see what happens in the next few days. I know...an adult should not be this excited but after a month of barely any movement, its like Christmas! I'm going to leave the photo comparison for a few days to get the best look at any movement (so I don't think its all just in my head!)
Anyway, sorry for the waffle...I'm just getting very excited and I know you guys will understand more than my poor boyfriend who asks 'which tooth do you think is moving again??'
I lost another molar build up I was happily eating away when it just popped right off! I still have one more left...and it is kind of nice to have my back molar liberated...
The pain from my last adjustment had kind of subsided except when chewing, brushing...basically it hurts when I use my front teeth! So its back to a mush diet for me I'm seeing a bit more movement which is encouraging but still counting down the days to my next adjustment (24!). And once my crazy forward premolar gets its butt back in line my ortho can give the all clear on no extractions and I can get my uppers on...come on premolar!
I just looked back at my last post and I can't see any difference!! I must have been super excited about the pain=movement and got a bit ahead of myself...hopefully my next pics will show something a bit more obvious
I wish my pre-molars would call a truce and just sit happily side-by-side
My 2nd premolar which is sitting behind the 1st and trying to push its way in is hurting a LOT today - I'm hoping this means its moving but the problem is there doesn't seem to be enough space for it to move to! My ortho did some IPR when I first got braced but they've seemed to use this all up...so now it just hurts and doesn't seem to have a home to go to. Is it weird that its the only tooth that is hurting?? I'm a little worried its something more...
Nothing is really happening with any of my other teeth...they're just sitting there bored until these two get in line and then they can get some attention!
Well my final molar build-up decided to free itself from my tooth last night...while I was eating chocolate and so making me feel even more guilty for my Sunday evening choco fest! I'm kind of worried about my bite now...it was there to allow my lower pre-molar to shift backwards without my upper one getting in the way and now when I bite, my whole jaw just slides to the right because my pre-molar tips are warring for position. Its okay when I'm awake, I'm conciously trying to keep my teeth apart but I was woken up a few times last night because for some reason I kept clamping down and the pain was so bad! And now I'm really worried that all my good work moving my lower premolar inwards is going to be ruined
I called my ortho about it but as I have an appointment this Friday, the assistant thought I'd be fine for a few days but if I'm in pain to come in. I didn't want to be a moany patient so gonna see how I get on the next few days. Guess it's back to the liquid diet for a while!! Bought a new blender so its an excuse to give it a try!
Hope everything went well with you ! .. Don't worry about anything to be ruined braces fix something and ruin something at the same time but at the end all will be fixed .
Your lower teeth look pretty like mine . My lower premolar was too inwards and I had IPR as well on the next teeth to have some Space for pulling it outwords and it's almost aligned now . This tooth feels loose and wobbly now
