Is it too late for extractions?

#1 Post by Toby93 »

Hello - I am new here, although I have been reading the posts on this site for a few months. My braces were put on last September and I am 46 now. At my initial consultation, I was told that I needed to have two top teeth extracted, but over the last couple of months my ortho has been filing my teeth to create spaces and then close them. I have asked him at my last two visits when I will be having the teeth removed, but he has been quite vague about it. He thinks that my teeth are looking very good and I know they have improved, but I still have a big overbite and was really hoping to have that fixed. I am now 8 months into treatment and was wondering if anyone has had extractions at this point in their treatment?

Tell him that you want the extractions. He should be open to your opinions. It is after all your mouth and your money.

Ask him at the next visit that by now you thought u would have had the extractions to start correcting the overbite since u r 8 months into treatment and your concerns. My ortho was vague at the first visit and when i saw that i decided i needed anwers and asked him to answer the things i was concerned about. I
I think they get used to seeing kids who sit in the chair let th work on them and ask no questions. He might be waiting for something else to happen first
Good luck

Thank you for the replies! I have an ortho appointment tomorrow so I am definitely going to ask when the teeth will be extracted.

Well, I finally had the 2 teeth extracted. It went really well, not a lot of pain or problems and I ge the full wire put back on next week. Hopefully I will see an improvement over the next few months as their is now a lot of space for the teeth to move back. I have not had any teeth pulled since I was a kid so I was a bit nervous, but the worst part was the freezing - the actual extractions only took a minute or so and it was over. I have had the braces on for 14 months now and the original estimate was 20 months so I hope to have them off by summer!
