My ortho hasn't told me how long

#1 Post by braceface46 »

I have never been told how long I'll have to keep this torture device on. Does everyone else get told a timeline as far as when the braces will taken off? I wasn't told anything and these are driving me nuts!!!!!! I can't imagine having to live like this for years.
I've had them on for 11 days and it's awful. My brain keeps telling me, "okay, take it out now". Awful.

I relate. At 11 days I was checking the "early out" option in the contract.
Just didn't think I go the 24 months my orthodontist stated.

Now I am five months in. My orthodontist & dentist have commented (with surprise) how quickly my teeth are responding & I may have a shorter treatment time.

Still being very careful about eating and what I eat..... never thought I would miss a sandwich so much.

YOGAPAWS
Eating a sandwich is rough. But I've found tearing a bite off at a time helps the mechanics, not so much the flavor. I still don't taste food as well.

Braceface that is really weird...

I was told during the consultation (A week after i had my molds, xrays, pictures etc taken)

During that time i was told the price; we came up with a payment plan suitable to my pocket.
And i was told the issues to be dealt with during the treatment time, and the estimated period of treatment 18-24mnths..
I was also told about after braces; retainer, i might need a surgery to remove my upper frenulum etc....

So im curious as to what you ortho told you before slapping on all that metal in ur mouth...

I was also told not to bite into things........So since day one i have always cut.tear my food into small pieces before chewing...
But besides being told that...my front teeth are usually sore and it would hurt to put pressure on it...

My ortho told me 18 months but said that that really means anywhere between 15 month and 2 years! (Even if I do everything I'm supposed to) I think the estimates are quite rough, especially to start with when they don't know how quickly your teeth will move.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I am miserable!! My teeth feeling like they are falling out. I hate this and don't know how i'm going to get through another day. I might just stop by the orthodontist and ask him to take a look. This Sux!

I know what you mean. i'm going through the horrible first week right now and hate the loose feeling I'm starting to feel. I think the key thing is to think of the end result as much as possible. Thats whats helped me and just remember it does get better (or so everyone says)! I'm here if you need to vent though.

Thanks Starfish,

So you feel the same loose feel to your teeth? It drives me nuts, because one thing that's important to me is my teeth. My teeth weren't really that crooked at all, just the bottom ones that only me and my dentist could see. All my friends were shocked that I needed braces. Now I'm shocked at how miserable I am. I am usually a pretty touch person so I'm just not quite sure about all this. Mornings are best, by the end of the day I'm ready to rip these things out of my head.

Thanks all for your support!

I also keep having people reassure me however loose the teeth feel they won't come out. That helps because I constantly have dreams of my teeth falling out and its horrible. Luckliy for me the loose teeth keep changing so I'm not stuck with the feeling for long in one place!

My teeth felt loose also.. then a few days later the tooth (teeth) moved.
My bottom teeth were pushed forward, overlapping over the front teeth. They are almost completely straight (to my eye) after five months!

The sandwich thing- I complain about it but I think I am going to continue eating the "ortho" diet. I really feel a lot better- after I got over the initial physical shock of extreme weight loss.

dont worry!! the beginning is always the worst. Take advil for the pain and eat soft foods. Once you see progress in your teeth you'll feel a lot better! the pain does go away and you will get used to the look. Don't take them out you will regret it!

Ditto this! The first two weeks are pretty rough. I'm about a month and a half in and I barely notice that I have braces any more. You'll get used to eating and talking.

I would flat out ask the ortho what your expected treatment time is. OR, when you go in for an appointment, they will probably hand you your chart while you are waiting to be seen (this seems to be standard practice amongst the orthos I consulted with). Your estimated treatment time is written on your chart, if you can read the doctor's writing  Mine told me how much my time was (24 months) but I saw that on my chart he wrote 24-30.
