Sorry I just had to post something about this eve-

I was skipping through tv channels and saw some "boy band" on a chat show-I said to hubby I think it's One Direction. I then said I'd let him know in a minute and then confidently said it was them. Hubby asked me how I knew and I said see the blonde guy on the end Niall Horan he has ceramic braces like me. Hubby looked at me as if to say trust you for spotting something like that!

I just can't believe how tender and sore my teeth still are after my adjustment on Friday-On the upside I think that this discomfort means movement which can only be a good thing!

Well, try to hang in there. You're coming in to the home stretch now. October 29th isn't all that far away. Perhaps things will start to quicken up a bit between now and then!

My husband mentioned last week that a colleague of his was on a soft diet and then he told me that he had also just got ceramic uppers with a coated archwire. My husband's colleague didnt know I had them and he then said "my wife has got those too".

A couple of days later I remembered I had an unopened box of silicone wax and gave it to my husband to pass on, apparantly he was very grateful :-)

On another note just under 2 weeks until my next appointment (29 October).

Nice of you to pass that along. I'm sure it was appreciated. Has your diastema closed any further? I had a long discussion with my orthodontist about whether or not he could close my gap with just elastics and not using powerchains. He said it was possible but it would take a long time. So, i asked him how long? He said about three years. He's reluctant to do it that way he said because he doesn't like to keep people in braces for more than two years. I'm not sure that I'd be willing to wear them for three years either. So, I have some thinking to do. He did say we could do it that way if I really wanted to.
On another note, even more disturbing, though, he said that he's going to be putting (what he referred as) bite turbos on my back teeth when he wires me up next week. The primary reason was so I won't "bite off my braces" on the bottom teeth. Apparently, not only do I have a large gap, I also have a deep bite. He said he needed to do that in order to a) open my bite and b) stop me from clenching my teeth at night when I'm sleeping. The periodontist he sent me to said there was quite a bit of wear on my back teeth from clenching and he supsected that I had been doing it for a long time. "You won't be able to do that, though, once you get your braces on," he said. But he didn't say anything about the bite turbo things.
The orthodontist said that the bite turbos would keep me from being able to close my mouth all the way. SI forgot to ask him how long I would have to have those things in my mouth. So, I've been really fretting and worrying about it. I guess I won't find out until I get my braces on at the end of next week. So, I'm trying not to think about it too much because when I do, I just start feeling really anxious all over again. Yuck.

Hi,
I was wondering if your diastema has continued to close. Your appointment is just about a week away now, right? Has it made any more progress since your last posting?

It's definitely smaller but is still there-just under 2 weeks so it's still possible that it may have closed by then. I am surprised at how small it is, my nail fits in with barely any wiggle room (lol at my description) and have had food stuck in the small gap too.

Dee. I have a deep bite too and have a removable bite plate, which seems to address my night grinding (I'm not sure whether I still grind-hubby hasn't mentioned the dreadful noise. I wear my bite plate at night but tbh I have let it slip on the day time wear, my speech is still lousy with it now and it just feels so unnatural and uncomfortable-can't eat or drink with it as it just makes me feel sick.

I'm really hoping my teeth will be contoured at the end as my front teeth are different lengths and not a great shape due to the way they wore in the position they were in. Once they have been shaped and the composite is applied to what will be the remaining space behind the canines my teeth should look fantastic and I will actually want to smile and have photos :-D

Hi,
I'm glad to hear you've had so much success with everything. Must make the whole thing seem worth it, huh?
I don't have a problem with grinding. My problem is just with clenching, hence the molar buildups. He said the other reason I have to have them is to "open my bite" but I really don't understand that. I just hope I don't have to have them for very long.
I can NOT wait to see pictures of how your teeth look when all is said and done!

With the deep bite it means that the upper teeth cover too much of the lower teeth or may not even be visible. The purpose of the bite plate/build ups/turbos is to allow the back teeth to come down more thus reducing the deep bite. I remembered the jist of it as inwas shocked that I'd be getting this bite plate, I think the turbos were the back up plan.

I'm getting used to these braces now. Never thought I would ever say the word braces as my extreme phobia prevented me from dping anything about my teeth and the sight of braces made my stomach churn and sent me running in the other direction. I think the only way I have been able to do this was by having ceramics and coated archwire which meant it was very discreet and wasn't a bold reminder to me everytime I saw a mirror.

It has been worthwhile and I will be chuffed when my diastema is closed, even though I will have another 3-4 months to go.

Hi,
thanks for your message.
I am just really confused about the whole thing. First of all, I don't understand HOW the bite turbos are supposed to "open" the bite. How the upper molars "come down" especially in someone who's already an adult. I know that my upper teeth really cover my bottom teeth a lot. My upper teeth reach down almost to the gum line on my lower teeth. He didn't explain how the whole thing was supposed to work. Unfortunately his office is closed until next Monday(the 22nd) for renovations so I can't even call there to talk to him. By the time the office opens up again on Monday, it seems a little silly because I'm supposed to go in for bracketing on Thursday. So I'm hoping I'll be able to get some answers from people on this forum.
Thanks for shedding some light on the "eep bite" issue, though. I appreciate it.

I was puzzled too but apparently the back teeth stop erupting when they come into contact with the upper/lower teeth so by stopping the back teeth from meeting by means of plate/turbos/build ups it allows them to erupt further and open the bite which will then address the deep bite issue. If you like on Smilehopes story she had a bite plate and shows what this sort of intervention does to treat the deep bite.

P.s I am typing this message whilst wearing my bite plate :-)

Hi,
Thanks for the explanation. It's not anything that ever occurred to me. I thought that once you reached adulthood that your teeth stopped growing. So, the purpose of it is to allow the back molars to grow "taller" so that the deep bite decreases. Very interesting. Thanks for referring me to Smilehopes story. I just finished reading it and found it very interesting. I think I am very glad that I will not have to wear one of those bite plates, thank you. They sound like they are very unpleasant.
I just got home from being out having a nice juicy steak dinner. Decided to have one last pre-bracket meal fling. It was kind of gristly and so was a bit disappointing. I was surprised at how much trouble I was having chewing it and thought that there would be NO way I'd be able to eat something like that with braces on. So, it was, all in all, good.
Hope you're doing well!
Dee
