I have a surgery date!

#1 Post by HelenUK »

Hi Guys,

I went to see my surgeon last week and finally i have a date booked for surgery! It should be, fingers crossed, on 4th september. This could get postponed nearer the time as my surgeon also treats cancer patients and they get priority. To recap, I have an overbite, I've had braces for 2 years, and I will be having my upper jaw brought upwards, forwards, and expanded, and the lower jaw brought forward and up to match. It's been a long road so far and there's still a way to go, but to have a date to count down to is really good. I plan to eat all summer in preparation!

Best of luck to you, one of the best decisions I ever made!

Thankyou for your messages. Only 2 weeks to go now! I had an orthodontist appointment last week where I had all the measurements and moulds taken for surgery, and the facebow (ow!), and some extra hooks on my wires. I go back next week for a wafer fitting and then it's just waiting and hoping it doesn't get postponed! I still haven't heard anything from the hospital.

So I went to the orthodontist today and found out that my wafer fits, but that my surgery has been cancelled for next week due to emergency cancer ops, I don't have a new date yet but its definitely not in the next 2 weeks. :(

My sypmathies Helen - the same happened to me. You get all psyched up, and then a call cancelling everything. You sound like you're taking it remarkably calmly (I was distraught!), but perhaps you could ask if they have a cancellation or stand-by list? My revised date for surgery was five weeks after my original date, which seemed like forever at the time, but they managed to pull it forward a week at short notice. In the meantime, I hope the hooks aren't annoying you too much. I had them for two months before surgery because of the Christmas/New Year holidays and the cancellation and found that even more food than ever got trapped in my mouth! Hope you get a new date soon.

Cant' really argue with that! Did you go NHS or private?

Thanks for your messages, yep i'm NHS. I've got a phone number to ring this week to find out what the situation is now. I need as much notice as possible to arrange cover at work. I am disappointed but i'm not distraught - it's not like i'm ill and need this surgery right now!

Poor you, you have my sympathy. I have only been surgery ready 12 weeks but now im playing the waiting game. I dont think my surgery will be anytime this year but im hoping before easter next year.

There is a big backlog at my hospital as there was no Maxillo facial surgeon for about a year so im slowly making my way up the list.

hopefully you're recovering right now.

i had my surgery scheduled, and two days before, my surgeon asked me to come by. didn't say why. when i got there, he wanted to take my blood pressure. surprise! he was afraid it was too high and that i couldn't have my surgery. i started freaking out. all that waiting, and it might get pushed. my blood pressure was still higher than it should be, but it was safe for surgery. and on the day of my surgery, they took my blood pressure and it was really good.

anyway, please update when you get a chance. hope everything went swimmingly.

Hiya,

My surgery did get cancelled a week before, and rescheduled for 24th oct - so i'm still waiting! one week to go, again. This time i'm told that it definitely won't get cancelled. I'm glad your blood pressure was good enough. how long ago was your surgery?
