Elastics cause bite to come apart? Need reassurance

#1 Post by littlered »

Hi everyone. I've had braces for 1 year. I had a topic in "Our Braces Stories" but I haven't updated it in months because my "progress" has been not so good. I was wearing elastics for a couple months before stopping them for a while and now my orthodontist says to put them back on but I'm really conflicted because I don't like what they did to my teeth.

From June 18 to September 13 I wore the elastics from my upper first premolars to the lower second molars, to bring the lower molars forward. I was told they would make my bite better. After a few weeks wearing them my bite changed so much that I couldn't close my mouth fully. It was like the very last back teeth had come too far out of the gums. Like they'd come up instead of forward. My front teeth met edge to edge while my back teeth were together and my jaw liked to sit with my lower teeth slightly in front of the uppers. My premolars were so far apart that I could stick my tongue out between them with my mouth closed as much as it could be. I had trouble swallowing because my front teeth didn't overlap and my tongue pushed out between them. That really freaked me out.

From May to August my teeth went from this to this (biting down hard as I could):

Two months ago my ortho said to stop wearing the elastics because they'd done more than he expected.

Right now my teeth look like this:

At my adjustment yesterday he told me to put them back on. I don't know if that's a good idea. Since taking them off, in the last month my teeth have come back together enough that I've been able to swallow normally and chew things like soft pasta again. I thought that was a good thing! I told him that my front teeth won't overlap any more and he says that he'll just make them come down more. If he does that won't I look like a horse? And how will my jaw get more comfortable?

Also since the extraction gaps have been closing my face has changed. Friends and even doctors have commented that my face looks sick and thin even though I've gained back the weight I lost when I first got braces. My cheeks look sucked in and my face is longer. I get sad when I see my "before" picture at the ortho's office cos I miss my cheeks and my face and even how my teeth used to be :(

I like my orthodontist but with everything that's happened I have difficulty trusting him, and this process. As it is I'm at the point of taking strangers on the internet's advice on whether my teeth are doing the right thing.

So, is this what elastics are supposed to do? Is this just one of the steps I have to go through? Were my teeth overlapping too much before? Will my jaw just get used to this new position? What are other people going through? Everything I read about elastics says they make the bite come together. Has any one else had elastics make their bite worse, and then got it fixed later?

I just can't bring myself to put them back on. I've got some links pulling the lower molars forward so they'll still be moving even without the elastics. But then I feel awful not wearing them too. I don't want to be a bad patient but this treatment has been a nightmare for so many reasons and I'm at the end of my rope. It's been a year, when does this get better?

Hi Littlered: I feel your pain. I've been in 'treatment' for over a year and sometimes it feels like a never ending nightmare. I've had problems with elastic bands too and wondered if my orthodontist knew what he was doing. (See my post: should I find another orthodontist?)

Some things I'm learning about the pull of elastics. It's like physics. The force has to be pulling in the right direction. Seems obvious and simple, doesn't it? But apparently this isn't an exact science and the important thing is to be observant about what's happening and get your orthodontist's attention. I didn't feel like mine was paying close enough attention... and for a while he wasn't. But I had to overcome my reluctance to question his authority. It's taken a while. It's also helped that my regular dentist is an advocate for me and I can go see him to get his opinion on what's happening. If you're not happy, I hope you have a good regular dentist to talk to. Or get a second opinion. It's your mouth!

The other thing I learned about elastics and the movement of teeth. The 'pull' on the tooth creates an empty pocket in the bone; then amazingly the bone regenerates and fills up this pocket. All three of my dentists have confirmed this amazing fact. Knowing this really helped me understand what the process was. I was too haphazard about wearing mine, waiting too long after I ate to put them back on. Apparently, even and hour or two is enough to have the tooth shift back into that pocket and you lose momentum.

Now I eat with the elastic on my non-chewing side (because the teeth don't meet) and replace the elastic as soon as I've eaten--even if I can't get to the toothbrush right away. I'm already seeing a big difference!

Hope things improve for you.

Hello~

I am not sure what is wrong with the "now" picture. I think your teeth look better than they did before.
Actually, the photo on the right, of May-August, your teeth look like they could be in cross-bite on the left side? Is that correct?

I have been in elastics maybe 5 times over my treatment time, (3+ years), at one point we were over-correcting so I was told to stop wearing them. That was maybe 2 or so elastic stints ago. Right now, I am in elastics to bring my bite together since they should be coming off soon.

If I were you, I would try to talk to your ortho and voice your concerns. You have only been in braces for a year. Throughout my time, my teeth have looked good, looked bad, then great, then bad again...so it is a constant cycle of change. If you ortho is certified and knows what he is doing, then I would listen to what he says. I wouldn't not wear them because you don't think they are right.

My original estimate was 22-24 months. Clearly my case was a bit more complicated than originally thought. I recently looked back at my 24 month photos and my teeth look so much better now than they did then. There was no way they could have come off at 24 months...so, I know the journey can be frustrating at times, but eventually everything will work out. :D

Snowglobe32, yeah there is (relatively) nothing wrong with the "now" picture. That's the point, after 2 months without elastics I've finally gotten some more contact and I don't want to put them back in and go back to the open bite I had in August. In all my time with braces leaving the elastics off was the only time I've had an improvement and even then my teeth were still worse than in the beginning. I'm not sure what you mean about the cross bite? Do you mean that little incisor behind my "fang"? That was no big deal. It's totally in front of the bottom teeth now.

I know what you mean about things looking better, then worse in a cycle. My estimate is 30 months so I'm barely 1/3 of the way there.

Hey rahmama I checked out your thread. So you had your teeth pulled in what felt like the wrong direction too? I'm glad you had a few professionals to consult with. I think that's what I need. When I read about people having problems with their orthodonist and going to their dentist for support I get so envious I could cry. I don't trust my dentist at all anymore.

I've talked to my orthodontist a lot. He's sick of me complaining that I can't eat. None of his other patients have any problems he says. Nothing he says corresponds to anything that happens in my mouth. He doesn't understand how my teeth function. He doesn't understand how this affects me. The weight-loss, the headaches, the sleep disturbance, how it feels to have people comment on superficial stuff when I'm trying to tell them what I have to live with. He doesn't even understand what I want out of treatment. He acts like because my teeth are so bad I should be happy with anything.

Thanks for the info on elastics. I knew you had to wear them as much as possible but I never thought about why. I guess that's why my teeth could go back down a little after I stopped the elastics, cos the pocket underneath them wasn't filled up with bone yet. When I started on elastics I even wore them while I ate cos I was worried they wouldn't work if I took them out ever. I had to be told to wear them *less* after I complained about severe jaw pain. Then, as my teeth got worse I just got really obsessive about making sure they weren't out for too long cos I thought wearing them *only* 21 hours a day was the reason my bite opened up. One day when I was at a football game I was eating some hot chips really slowly and taking the elastics out and replacing them with every single chip lol. They can't say I didn't try.

I wore the elastics last night cos I felt so guilty having them off. And I got scared cos my bite got worse again the day before. Now my lower right molars are completely inside the upper ones so I can't even make a chewing motion with my jaw anymore. When I started treatment they were on top of each other. What is going on? Sorry for writing so much. I obviously need to talk to somebody about this.

littlered, i wore configuration elastic like yours when i was in braces. In theory, your orthodontist try to reduce your overjet by pull your upper teeth backward and your lower teeth forward (i think you have class 2 relationship like mine ?). My 'honored' orthodontist have never explained to me anything but from my experience, whenever the upper teeth pulled backward it would create open bite and sometimes when i wore it too long ( for months) my bite became almost edge to edge). When i stopped using it, the next several months my overjet would come back. That's why i still don't understand about this 'damn' elastic because the result seems unstable.

About your orthodontist said that he would bring down the front teeth, it's indeed a solution to prevent you from the bite in May-August picture. But for your concern that your teeth will looks like a horse teeth, i don't know. there's esthetic calculation about how long a tooth should be compared to the width of the tooth itself.

My problem was my orthodontist always asked me to wear that configuration but she didn't bring my front upper teeth down. She only asked me to wear rectangle configuration elastic in the night but i didn't see that night use only brought my upper teeth down stable. In the morning the open bite will close, but in the noon it became open again. :-+

Oh then, this suddenly pop up in my mind, if you think it logically, doesn't it make upper lip become longer??
