Has anyone ever used Biotene with their braces?
I have a very dry mouth, esp when I wake up in the morning. I also have gingivitis.
I usually use Listerine twice a day, and ACT fluoride rinse at night after it.
My hygienist said I stop stop the Listerine and use Biotene PBF instead. I was a little confused because the Listerine helps keep tarter and gingivitis at bay, but I guess I will listen.
My question is.. Has anyone used it with braces? Any type of Biotene.. and WHEN do I use the Fluoride rinse if that is the case? I do not think I can put it on after the Biotene. Very confused indeed.

Hmm I don't know about the flouride rinse, I have a different brand of biotene here that I used for the first couple of weeks because my mouth really dried out with my braces at first. It's normalized itself now though mostly so I don't use it as much anymore. I do know that you can't eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after you use it. Perhaps use the biotene morning and night and the flouride rinse after your lunchtime brush? (Not sure the conditions of use for a flouride rinse).

I used Biotene once or twice. I thought it was really icky. Occasionally I still get a dry mouth and nothing seems to quench my thirst, but it's not bad enough to use the Biotene...

lol I will deal with icky if it stops the dry mouth and takes off the plaque film on my teeth. The reviews for it are pretty incredible. The PBF version

I love Biotene!! I don't think the taste is too bad. I am getting bad irritation from my bands and Biotene helps, at least temporarily. When my mouth is dry and my lips sticking to my teeth, I use it to kind of lubricate everything, rather than painfully move my gums around, especially first thing in the morning.

I've found that listerine(and other alcohol based mouthwashes) tends to dry my mouth out, so I use an alcohol free type. Biggest thing that helps me with gingivitis is flossing twice a day

How often do you use it? The taste does not bother me. I am just trying to figure out when to use it, esp when I use act flouride rinse also. I use act only at nightLirvinrn wrote:I love Biotene!! I always brush first..
Should I use biotene BEFORE act.. or wait a half hour to 45 mins AFTER act. Confusing.

I didn't think it mattered when. I might use it 3-4x a day, depending on how my mouth feels. I use Crest without alcohol after flossing and brushing then the Biotene so I'm left with that moist, almost oily feeling.

My orthro said that ACT is a must because it helps prevent the white spots when the braces come off. I know when you use it, it says not to drink or eat for 30 minutes.Lirvinrn wrote:I didn't think it mattered when. I might use it 3-4x a day, depending on how my mouth feels. It does not say that with the Biotene. I guess I will use the biotene after I brush and just use the ACT rinse a lil while later after that. Hopefully it doesnt mess up the effects.
I currently use Biotene 2x a day. Simply because that stuff is expensive!

I never considered there was a difference between mouthwashes. It seems that ACT has almost 2x fluoride than Crest. I will pick up some and see if I like it. Never tried it before. I think no matter the brand, as long as you are flossing every day, brushing thoroughly, preferably after ever meal, and using some sort of rinse, you will be fine. My ortho recommended Colgate Phos-Flor rinse. Has 0.022% fluoride compared to ACT which is 0.05%. Hmmm

Well the Fluoride in ACT is different from the one in the Colgate, so they basically end up being the same thing. Dont let the percentage discourage you. Remember with braces you should use a pure fluoride rinse also, and with all of those, you can not drink for 30 mins after. I would deff add one of them to your regimen.Lirvinrn wrote:I never considered there was a difference between mouthwashes. It seems that ACT has almost 2x fluoride than Crest. I am pretty sure the crest does not say not to drink or eat for 30 mins on the bottle and is basically just a mouthwash. Could be wrong though

I used the Biotene dry mouth gel at night time for a few months. My mouth did eventually stop drying out and I no longer need to use it. I found the taste to be pleasant and it worked quite well.

Ceramic uppers, metal lowers put on March 6 2012 to fix spacing issues and traumatic malocclusion. Estimated treatment time is 24 months.

Just an FYI: Biotene is buy 1, get 1 50% off at Walgreens and there are coupons in the Sunday paper. At least there were in mine. Gotta save $$ to pay for these braces!
