"clear braces? I get so confused with all the names.....damon, ibraces, the behind the teeth ones, invisalign, etc. Whats the name of yours?"
It does get confusing...I know you didn't ask me the above question but come to think of it, I have no idea what brand my brackets are. I have ceramic (clear) on the top 6 and metal everywhere else.
Braces behind the teeth = lingual or ibraces
Braces that look like a clear mouthguard = invisilign
Any type of bracket worn on the front of teeth = different brand names, such as: damon, clarity...these can be metal or clear (ceramic)
You can also ask to see the brackets they use. I suggest to everyone, while you're at the office, see if you can check out what the patients have. This way you can get a better understanding of what they offer.
I still think the $700 is too high, maybe see if you can negotiate especially since he isn't a certified ortho. Or do they have certified ortho's there? Then again, maybe paying the $700 will kick your bum in gear to get the braces because we all want you too!

I did too at first. I have Damon Clear self ligating on the top (this means that instead of being attached to the wire with the little coloured plastic rings, they have tiny doors on them that hold the wire in place-less chance of staining). On the bottom I have 3M Clarity, they do have the rings but I choose smoke colour because they still look clear but haven't stained.SunshineRay wrote:clear braces? I'm 34 and was thinking the same things as you. I have a 13 year old daughter who got her braces on before me and twins who will both be needing them in 2 years. As a teenager my parents were told i didn't need orthodontic work but over time things that were a bit of an issue back then got a whole lot worse.
I too suffer with anxiety and while I have clear braces, I admit that I still feel a bit self conscious about them when I'm talking to people. I've seen a couple of girls at my ortho's office with them too and you really can hardly tell they are there. I've had a few people tell me they didn't even realize I had braces (I guess people who don't have them just don't pay attention, we pay far more attention to it than we should ).
I'm glad I got them on though and really, I have the rest of my life to enjoy having good teeth. 14 months of braces for another 40 odd years (maybe!) of a good smile seems well worth it.
Definitely go with the ortho you feel comfortable with though. Mine is great with adult patients (and with kids). He told me about 40% of his patients these days are adults so you're definitely not alone! I think the 2nd one you saw was rude asking you if you just woke up hating your teeth one day. Of course you didn't! It's never too late to change something you hate. I wouldn't be giving him my money.
If you call your ortho's office and ask they'll generally be happy to tell you which brackets they use. Honestly, I don't think different brands make any difference to your treatment as long as your ortho is skilled. It's just what they prefer to use and branding much like YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME HERE YOU SHOULD GO TO THE COTTAGE DOROTHY! OH SUGAR BARBARA STANWYCK or Asics but for braces

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
Go ahead and take the plunge. I can relate. I never smiled; never got in pictures; only smiled around my immediate family members. I never said anything about how I felt to any one because I was . My mother picked up on it and took steps to put me on my orthodontic journey . My front teeth were crossing over each other and pushing outward and my bottom teeth were crossing over each other and pushing forward.
Im 50 years old and even though there is pain associated with treatment and I do get frustrated I'm so thankful this journey has started. With my braces after only 8 months I see the progress and I smile and laugh now more than ever before yes I show my metal mouth. And I have fun when its time to change ligs to a different color. My 5 year old asks me to to say "cheese" after each adjustment so he can see the new color. Trust us here at the forum. When you take this step you wont regret it and your self-esteem will be sky high.

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
I live in a very rural area and there are no orthodontists within an hour and a half drive from my house .. so I do understand the logistics and aggrivation of having to go further away to get treatment and if you don't feel comfortable with that one then go further out and find one you are! you will be putting yourself in this persons hands for around 2 years, you better at least like em! I had a free consultation at a few ortho's and paid 125 for my molds and xrays and pictures and such .. $700 seems outrageous to me .. I had 2 sons with braces and even 10 years ago we still only paid 125-150 for the molds, xrays, etc .. shop around.. you might find someone that will make you feel committed to following through! :) good luck!

I emailed the dentist this morning to ask the exact price that the ortho consult would cost. Hopefully I was told wrong because it does seem outrageous.

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
Im suddenly obsessed with this board and keep checking back.
My dentist never called me back yet about the $700, which is kind of irritating.
A co-worker was just telling me about her daughters visit to the rude ortho I went to. We have the same insurance so again he was her only choice. She doesnt know that I went obviously. He quoted her daughter the same price as me. She did say he was a little odd but thats the only option she has and her daughter didnt mind him.
Insurance wont cover any of mine so it doesnt really have to do with that. He quoted me $4800, does that seem like an average price?

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
That's what I'm paying.
I am also paying out of pocket. Even if I had dental insurance, it wouldn't cover ortho for me because at my age, it is considered cosmetic.
If you're paying out of pocket, your choices are limited only by the length of travel you are willing to do each approximately six weeks.

My insurance doesn't cover ortho after age 19 - I'm 26. My braces treatment is approximately $5,000, out of pocket. I'm looking at it as an investment.

Go for it!!! I am 23 and I just had my braces put back on. I didn't want to put them on because of the price but I found a place in central Florida and they are very reasonable and help with the process of getting braces. Good Luck with your journey!!

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
I made another free consultation for Feb 18th. Still havent heard back from my regular dentist. Grrr! Ive decided that Im going to tell my husband about all this over the weekend. I just feel like admitting it makes me imperfect or something.....obviously he lives with me and knows Im not perfect.

Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
Why don't you go for Lingual braces (behind the teeth), I'm 31, and I think I never would have done this if I had to have regular braces. No one can see them, and I am glad I don't have to explain to everyone.. I wonder though -what is wrong with a gap between the front teeth? I almost want to tell my ortho to give me one, because I think it's really cute! I think weird teeth is great! The only reason I'm doing this is because I need to have a jaw surgery for my bite..
Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
It took me a while to fess up to my husband about wanting to do this. I am nearly done and am so glad I have for this and know it has worked miracles on starting to build me some confidence about myself.

Oh I have other issues. I have a bad bite, overbite, narrow top jaw and will need an implant after braces from a tooth that was pulled and shouldnt have been. My mouth is kind of a mess right now but I hide it well.annepanne wrote:Why don't you go for Lingual braces (behind the teeth), I'm 31, and I think I never would have done this if I had to have regular braces. Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
Ok. I understand. of course.. Just so you know, it's not that much more expensive with linguals. and I must say that though it has been difficult, it's a great choice if you feel it will be too problematic for you to show the braces.
Re: I cant commit to getting braced. :(
I'm rooting for you SunshineRay
I hope you find a way to do this for yourself. It sounds like you deserve it.
