Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymore

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
All metal here, too and have had no problems. Kind of cute but I have hooks everywhere, waiting for different elastic configurations to take place. Oh, and the power chains are pearly smoke colored so everything looks good. Bonus - I got new elastics in bright colors: green, orange, purple and pink!

Hi marybee
oh wow sounds good
I think I will need a powerchain to help close my extraction gaps, do you get to pick the colour of your chain? I would go with smoke as well

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
I love my metal braces! I don't get multicolored elastics but keep it neutral with my silver ones because of my job. I can eat curry, spaghetti sauce, and other "staining" foods and drinks without having to worry about how my teeth would look. I was going to go with clear but knowing my eating habits and how much of a struggle braces are already, metal was a natural choice for me. (plus I want these suckers off as soon as possible so I'm happy to be a 'metal mouth' for awhile to gain my freedom quicker)
Go with what works for you!

You can pick any color of power chain you want (I'm still debating on lime green!) but really like the pearly gray since you can eat and stains will not show. They also make the braces look cool, too!

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
When I had braces the first time around (5-7 years ago), I wanted to get coloured powerchains. My ortho had them in all colours, but wasn't keen on using any colour but plain gray. He said I could have colour if I wanted it, but that it would compromise the speed of my treatment, so if it was more important to me to have colour than to get on with the job...
Looking back, I should really have been warned by his attitude. I always wanted colour but he made me feel silly for asking, especially as I was already an adult in full metal braces. I wonder if any other orthos have the same attitude towards coloured powerchains? He was fine with coloured ligs (his assistants put those on anyway), just the chains.
Does anyone else's ortho think colour in a powerchain diminishes it's strength?

Haven't heard that one before? Besides when I got my first powerchain a week or 2 ago they asked me what color and didn't really go into a "strength" discussion. I mean aren't they all the same type of powerchain? It's just a change in color in my mind (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
That's what I thought, Mehogeni, I was surprised when he said it would compromise treatment time. I don't think he was differentiating between the colours in terms of strengths; just any colour as opposed to basic gray. I got the impression he meant that the process of dying or however they colour the material reduced its effectiveness (in his opinions), even if just slightly.
Seemed weird then, still seems weird now. I just wondered if anyone else had ever heard of this!

Re: Does anyone actually have traditional metal braces anymo
My daughter has had 3 powerchains, all of them a different colour and my ortho has never mentioned them being stronger or weaker than the others either (he's also of the school though that it makes no difference to treatment time if you have clear braces or metal, not sure if that makes any difference to his opinion of powerchains or not).
Seems a bit odd to me too. I would think that dying something gray would be the same as dying it pink or green or blue.

I have never heard of different colour powerchains being different strengths either, i might have to ask my ortho this question!

I'll get mine on next Wednesday (less than a week! Eek!) and I still haven't decided! I keep switching back and forth.
