Hi Crizzles i live in melbourne and really want the inman aligner alternative to braces. Can i ask what dentist you went to? How are you finding th IA? Would love some info.

I was wondering if anyone else had whitening done at the end of their treatment and found the process VERY painful? I've been told I need to sleep with the trays in for 2-3 weeks, but I'm only 5 days in and my gums are so sore I couldn't even brush my teeth this morning. My upper front gums are bleeding. ~Anyone got any advice?

Sorry to hear it's so rough for you! This advice is like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, but I hear that brushing your teeth with a toothpaste like Sensodyne for a week prior to whitening will make it less painful.

Seagull - Wish I'd heard of this before I started the bleaching process!!
I stopped using the bleaching gel for 2 nights and instead filled the trays with Sensodyne and they seemed to have calmed down a little.

Hey Guys

I am 23 and today is my first in Inman Aligners. I have never had braces but I am shocked by the pain when putting the brace in and taking it out does this get better? I am also finding it impossible to speak clearly in the brace and my work involves working in customer service in a call center. My dentist has said my speech will be back to normal in 2 weeks can anyone confirm this? Also I have had filler placed on the inside of two teeth and when I eat my bottom teeth hit these and cause pain. I am worried that I was told it would take around 12 weeks but many examples on here cite at least 16 weeks. I have this weird gut feeling at the moment of what have I got myself into and will my teeth really move! Would appreciate hearing some positive results and how its all worth it!! I feel like I have a gum shield in!

Mark180 - the pain you're describing should subside in a couple of days I'm sure and if it doesn't, you should give your Dentist a ring. I know for the first few days my teeth ached a little and the inside of my cheeks were torn to shreds, but a little dental wax purchased from Boots did the trick just fine. It's amazing how quick you get used to putting the aligner in and taking it out, even without the need to look in a mirror. I'm almost at the end of my treatment now 17 wks. I was told it would take approx 4 months and after 3 months my Dentist was happy with the position and switched me to clear retainer trays to be worn all day and at night time filled with bleaching gel. However I did have a feeling that the clear trays did not fit as snug as I thought they should if, as I was told, they would act as my permanent night time retainer for the rest of my life. I went back for my appointment last Wednesday, the Dentist expecting to finish off with some dental bonding and to his dismay realised that one of my front teeth had moved ever so slightly, back out of line, so I'm now back in my inman aligner for a couple more weeks before I return to have them bonded and he's now decided a fixed wire behind my teeth will be better for me. I must be totally honest and even though my speech did improve after a couple of weeks, I still remove my brace each time I have to speak on the phone or if I attend any meetings. The front bar on the teeth is more bulky than most other braces, but the movement of the teeth is quite remarkable when you think of the time you will be wearing it, compared to most other braces out there which you would need to wear for a lot longer. I would say persevere with it because I'm sure you will be delighted with the results in the end.

turnbulls- Thank you for the reply and I will just have remember a little pain for a life time of gain. Just wish I could speak haha! Very interesting to hear you are having the wire behind the teeth. I would love to hear from you on how the wire feels when you have it in as my dentist has given me that option.

Hi Mark180, well done for starting, the first week is definitely the hardest so hang in there. I agree with Turnbulls post having had a very similar experience. I remember dreading taking my IA out at first but after a few minutes the pain/pressure subsides, putting it back in is also similar but just keep thinking that the more it is in the faster the results. In terms of speech, it does improve in the first two weeks and its best to talk as much as possible so that you get used to the letters that are hard to pronounce with it in! but mine never was back to normal (you and others do get used to it!). That said there are different IA's so some may not affect your speech as much. I guess its more tricky for you if you are on the phone in a call center. I always took my out on the phone except to family and a few friends. Re length of time, trust your dentist. Everyone will be given a timeframe specific to the movement required for their teeth. Mine needed the full sixteen weeks which was always what my dentist predicted, I then had two wait two weeks for my clear aligners to be made and had three sets of these each being worn for two weeks. Although it feels like it has gone on a little I am DELIGHTED with the results and compared to other braces it has been swift and I believe less expensive. I don't regret it one bit.

This morning I had another appoint. with my dentist, the three sets of clear aligners have done their job as of today and I had moulds taken ready to have the wire fitted in a fortnight. So i've got to wear the last clear aligner as a retainer until the wire comes in to be fitted. I can't wait. Once fitted I will then do the final step of whitening, excited is an understatement.

Turnbulls, sorry to hear the night retainer didn't work out, let me know how the wire goes, I shall be in the same boat in a few weeks. How is the whitening? Did the pain get better for you? Will you need to have new trays made for whitening now you are going to have the fixed wire or does that not effect it.

Hi Susiesue11 - My gums did improve during the whitening process, which is now complete, so no more trays needed. I can see some improvement in the colour but would of liked them a little brighter tbh., but I suppose my age could have something to do with how bright they'll go. My Dentist gave me 16% gel which is the lowest I believe they give for home bleaching, but I dread to think what state my gums would of been in with any stronger. I just have the wire to be fitted now and the bondingto complete to finish it off.

I got my Inman aligner fitted to my top teeth last week. I find that my speech is very difficult and doesn't seem to be getting any better and makes me very self conscious. Does this ever improve? Luckily the pain is now easing off and I am more able to brush my teeth.

The composite filling material put on the teeth to stop the brace slipping, this annoys my tongue when the brace is off (which is a good thing as its making me wear my brace more), does it come off easily with no marking? I am due to get it put on my front teeth eventually but don't want marking on my hopefully straight teeth!

Can people also advise how long they wore it each day please? I try to wear it as often as possible, but when socialising I prefer to take it out, but I am probably wearing it 18-20 hours a day.

Really hope this works, it almost seems too good to be true, a brace which makes teeth beautifully so quickly!

Hi Resby - if you are a week into treatment you should be over the achy stage and I'm sure your speech will improve a little with time. As I reported a couple of blogs back, I continued to remove my brace if I had to take any calls at work, or attend any meetings throughout my 16 weeks of wearing the aligner. I wore my brace 20 - 21hrs each day religiously and considering how overlapped my front two teeth were, it was amazing how quickly they aligned. I had composites on the front and back of my teeth and could not see any marks when they were removed.

I have an expander thing across the roof of my mouth which I think is stopping my speech getting better. Just sounds like I have my mouth full all the time!

My teeth are only slightly out of line, just need pushing back so hopefully if I wear it lots it will be off in 3 months!

When the composites are on the front teeth and I take my brace off for a big family event which is due around that time, will the composite be really obvious?

Hurry up 3-4 months time!!!
