Getting Braces very soon

#1 Post by foysie »

Hi - Being in my 50s, I am going to take the plunge and get braces on to straighten a top tooth and bottom teeth crowding and moving.

I had great teeth for years and about 10 years ago, this front tooth has started to shift outwards and up a bit.
Hate my pics because of this so braces it is !

They have told me it will take about 12 - 15 months. I think having braces will be better than the invisalign but still a little unsure ? :D

Hi! Welcome to the board :) I too was a candidate for invisalign but chose braces. I was worried about my ability to leave them on when things hurt a lot and the whole having to take them out to eat, then brush, put them back in thing seemed like a lot of trouble. In the end my ortho told me that while lots of people are happy with their invisalign results, you tend to get a better result with braces as you can adjust things as needed during the process which you can't do with invisalign (without incurring extra costs).

But all that being said, I think that for some they are right and if the alternative is that people do nothing then they definitely have their place.

Good luck with making a final decision :)

Thanks for reply !

Yes everyone I have spoken to, including my dentist, seem to favour Braces.

I gather he can still do dental work if necessary but if you have invisalign, you cant have
fillings etc as your teeth shape will have changed.

I feel that a better result in the end is achieved with the braces but I am a little nervous about the pain in the first week etc and hope I can handle it !!

For some of us it's pretty awful, but just as many if not more people don't get any at all or get very little :) The initial few weeks are tough but once you get past them it's mostly okay (I say mostly because I've just had an adjustment and am sitting here in pain as I type :P But it will pass in a couple of days and then I'll be back to saying it's easy again ;)). So long as you have some painkillers and plenty of soft and liquidy foods you'll be fine :) Plus it's all worth it once they come off I'm sure

Thanks for your information.

I know I will have to suffer a bit for the end result and my teeth will only be worse in 12 months without the braces so for the future, I want great teeth again !

My dentist told me I may be surprised in 4 weeks time how much will have moved already so I hope he is right !!

If I can get by with minimal pain, it would be godsend but who knows ?

For me it was mostly about prevention for future problems as well. My teeth weren't great, but they weren't terrible. They were getting worse the older I got though and I was starting to have some problems with the molars that were also going to get worse. My ortho told me now was the time to get moving if I was going to so I went ahead. I saw movement in the first month, but it was around month 3 that I really saw big changes, particularly in the top row. Everyone is different though (just like the pain thing!)

Do you have a brace date yet or just starting out?

Hi again,

Yes have booked in for 3 1/2 weeks time !!

But I am having some old fillings redone and now one of my top ones just done feels like it has sensitivity and aches from time to time. Didn't have that before they did it so need to get this sorted out asap!

Trying to get all my fillings that need redoing done over the next three weeks so ready then for the braces.

Don't want to have teeth pain BEFORE the braces go on so if needed may need to adjust date but will see what dentist says this week !

This website has been such a help already with information also.

Good luck with it all :) I had a couple of fillings checked also and a baby tooth extracted a week beforehand.

I have a filling in the very back that is sensitive and gets a dull ache at times. It's a rather large filling though

The 3 1/2 weeks will both drag on and go quickly :)

Yes- at first thinking about the date I am nervous yet preparing my mind to be positive.

I have wanted to do this for so long but reading about a lot of the pain issues, has given me
a lot to think of.

I did get an article on the internet that said don't be nervous about the putting on of them, its more the discomfort for the next 4 days or so. Then normal eating should be ok !

Hi Foysie :)

Welcome :)

I am getting my brackets on friday, and then archwire in on the following wednesday :) looks like you wont be far off from me getting your brace face so it will be great to follow your journey :)

I had 4 premolars extracted (two were baby teeth and decaying) and one wisdom tooth extracted. I have some pretty big gaps in my teeth at the moment cos of the extractions so I am hoping they close up ok!

Looking forward to reading more from you :) good luck with it all :)

Another filling redone today and two more appts to go.

Getting some older fillings redone before braces so every week another trip to dentist !

Good to see the older silver fillings go and new white ones come in - looks more modern indeed - hope they hold up alright but surely dentistry today is more up to date etc.

Still getting some comments re braces - one from a lady around my age ' why would you bother !"

but a nice young girl I told said " that's cool !!"

The younger ones feel there is nothing wrong with getting teeth straightened - a lot of the negative comments are from people with teeth not so good - hmmmmm.

Anyway, for ME, I want to look in the mirror and be happy with a lovely straight smile like I once had !! :D

I think the older people with not so nice teeth are just jealous!!! don't let them discourage you, I think its great what you are doing for yourself and you should be proud of yourself for doing it! :) :)

Thanks so much for the feedback and lovely comments of support !

Had another 2 big fillings redone today - apparently some decay under old fillings so now nice white fillings instead of metal - yay ! Appt was intense !

Another apt next week and then the next week the braces !!

I read a great quote today ' Begin with the end in mind !'

This is what we need to focus on - that end result in 15 months time !!

Don't think I have ever been so 'tooth' fixated as right now !!
