I have traditional metal braces on upper and lower. I could have paid a little extra for upper ceramics but decided to go all metal.
I am in my late 20's and don't care if people see I have a brace it's something I'm doing for myself not others. I have tried a few different colored ligs but always choose black now. The light colors always fade and stain and look nasty after about a week or two where as the black stay black. I also think black look pretty cool on the metal braces.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

I have ceramic on top and metal down the bottom. I would have preferred to go with all metal because it's would have been cheaper and the metal brackets are smaller but I'm too self conscious

I have all metal. Originally like the look of both but wanted to go with ceramic. The place I went to only did metal bottom and ceramic top. I was told that ceramic might break more at the bottom that's why they did metal bottoms. There was no way I was going to do half and half, personally I don't like the look. I'm glad I went all metal because I was looking at this girl I knew had braces but for that quick second I forgot and I saw her smile a bit and I was like "What is that on her teeth?" Her ceramics made me do a double take.

well, I ended up in ceramics, I was planning to do all metal, but chose ceramic.... I do have people look at my closely sometimes...but they will double take metal or not... I think that the ceramic takes them longer to notice... other times theynotice as soon as I open my mouth.ugh

I got all metal and I feel like everyone is staring at me! I have had mine for 3 days now!

A girl just asked me what I ate for lunch and I said "weetbix" and she said "how come?" and then I am guessing she didnt notice my mouth of metal but I showed her and she was fine with it. I think majority people notice (specially metal) and maybe just dont say anything but i hate when people dont say something and they just stare while talking to me or while I am talking, I am finding that really uncomfortable!

I just saw an article about Faith Hill's braces! She is 45 and has clear brackets but of course she is on stage. I'm sure the ones behind the teeth would have interfered with her singing.

I am thrilled with my metal braces. I think they're cute!

I'm getting my braces on May 8th, and I will be having the traditional metal on the top and on the bottom. The ceramic braces were going to be $600 more, and I wasn't willing to pay that.

Yeah, it does seem like a lot of extra money to pay. My orthodontist doesn't charge extra for the ceramic braces but I opted for all metal because everything I was reading was always talking about how they felt "bigger" in the mouth. I finally decided that I just didn't think I'd be able to tolerate that feeling so I got metal on top and bottom. Have not regretted it. Good luck on your brace day!

Glad to know you're adapting to your new look. I was out with a friend the other day and there was a little girl who, when she saw my braces, said, "Ooooh, pret-ty!" I nearly killed myself laughing. It was a whole new concept for me, believe me!

I think it is true that the metal braces make your teeth look whiter than clear or white braces. I think the more invisible look is awesome for teenagers, though. They can have their cake and eat it too--get straight teeth and not have that metal mouth look.
