oh i never thought of that! i could get the coffee staining the glue they use to put the bracket on, not actually our teeth?lizart wrote:I just had my first dental check up / cleaning since braces (January 3rd). I am older - 50 next month, so my teeth are not quite as white as they were when I was younger.... however, I am a tea drinker (strong and black). My hygenist commented that it was the adhesive surrounding the brackets that was causing the stain, so she used a type of pumice to remove the stains before the actual cleaning. I must say my teeth look considerably whiter! I was impressed with this technique, plus my ortho recommended getting a cleaning every 3 months throughout treatment.
From the research I did, it's the adhesive that's the most common culprit for the staining/yellowing, since ligs can be changed out, and for Damon Clears like mine, they really don't stain. So yeah, blame the glue!!rhibee83 wrote:oh i never thought of that! i could get the coffee staining the glue they use to put the bracket on, not actually our teeth?lizart wrote:I just had my first dental check up / cleaning since braces (January 3rd). I am going to go and get a clean soon, thanks for your advice!

...Two months later that ship sailed lol.
24 months is my predicted treatment time, and I soon came to the conclusion I wasn't going to be miserable in braces and simultaneously go that long without my favorite vice. I only need to have a latte once a day and I'll be satisfied, and I haven't noticed any significant staining since going back to drinking them. I brush in the morning, then do an intense cleaning at night (brushing with Prevadent, flossing, brush in between teeth and around brackets with toothpasted proxyl brush, then waterpick with tube and brush attachments), and finally mouthwash so I think I'm doing what I have to do in covering the bases to make sure I don't have coffee stains when they come off. Ironically what I've noticed does cause slight staining to my ligs is various sauces; one month I had spaghetti every day for dinner for like, two weeks, and when I got my ligs changed at my next ortho appointment I did notice the effects, but not on my teeth.
Honestly by now I think if I keep it in moderation I should be okay. I bought whitening rinse and used it for a few months, but then read somewhere that that could risk making your teeth look weird when you get your braces off by the outsides looking whiter than the insides that were coveredand decided I'd just wait until I was done with braces to think about whitening treatments.
Yay for caffeine!
