After getting braces I realized how much I took for granted eating beforehand. My biggest frustration is in having to either cut up everything (like right now for example; I'm using a fork and knife to cut up a freakin DONUT because if I bite into it, the gooey-ness will get caught in my front teeth and I'll have to pick at them at my work desk, yuck ) or in having to maneuver food to the back of my mouth when I eat because it's easier to chew back there as opposed to taking a simple bite. Sometimes I'll just turn down certain foods altogether because I know I'm just not gonna feel like picking it out of my teeth (and I'm not one of those people who can just leave it there until nighttime when I brush and floss, doubleyuck )
I think when I finally do get my braces off, I'll be like Gilbert says his sister Ellen was in the movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape: constantly running my tongue across my teeth and saying "Ooo, ahhh," like I can't believe the feeling of real teeth lol
I find myself just tearing all my food up hahhaa i must be a piggy cos I haven’t even thought of cutting up my food LOL just ripping it apart with my hands (i.e sandwiches, cakes, lol) Yep i turn down food as well cos sometimes I have just brushed my teeth after lunch and then i think argh its to much trouble!
HAHAHHA i LOVE that movie! Makes me cry all the time, but yes, I reckon i will be running around like that too hahahha!
Eating is the biggest difference as that is the time I always am aware of my braces. I now cut up hamburgers and pizza, and don't order sandwiches when I'm in public so it will be easier to clean up afterward even though it doesn't hurt at all for me to bite into things.
Fruit-wise I only eat bananas and grapes. Too much trouble to cut up other things. I find that even oranges are a pain. Unraveling the strands wrapped around everything is annoying.
Went to a baseball game last night and kept being offered pretzels, chips, candy, etc. Even though I usually don't eat those things as a rule, all I could think of was getting the remnants out of the crevices wasn't worth the effort, so it was easy to turn the offers down. I ate when I got home.
For the obvious reasons, I think I gave up biting my nails 50 years ago during my first braced experience.
I have been eating banana’s but mash them in a bowl with a fork lol, oh yes, oranges would be a pain!!
I guess saying no to certain foods just gets to be second nature and we don’t think about it as much!
I wonder if these habits will stick around once braces are off? PFFT.... I don’t think so, I am already trying to plan my first big meal once they come off. Might be STEAK hahaha!!
Oh yes! I forgot those little strips of skin on lips!! They drive me insane now!!!!
And I'm another one who doesn't cut up food unless I can't rip it apart with my hands.
I do manage to chew with my mouth shut, but I tend to spend a lot of time biting down painfully on my cheeks now. My daughter however chews away loudly because she's a can't close
This is silly, but I hate that Seri (on the iPhone) can no longer understand what I'm saying.
I miss salads! They are almost impossible to chew, and when I try, i get more food stuck in my teeth then in my stomach.
Chewing with my mouth open, is almost the only way I can chew. My bite blockers are huge and if I want to do any chewing at all I can't close my lips. This is killing me as open mouth chewers are a huge pet peeve of mine. I have to have them for 6-10 mouths! Also, with not being able to chew with my mouth shut, I make a yucky chewing sound.

haha i dont use Siri on my phone cos she can never understand my aussie accent! haha, well she can sometimes, BUT what I found was funny is one day i asked her "do you like chicken SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM?" out of fun, and she replied "yes, here are the Denver Nugguts" and bought up a list of the baseball (??) team in USA LOL! i laughed at her hahahhaa. this was prebraces and all haha!
I must admit people who chew loud and with their mouth open annoys me too! and I think I am now one of them I am glad that I dont have bite blockers, but I still cannot chew with my mouth shut as i dont want my front teeth to hit eachother!

I can understand why you Aussies tear your food apart with your hands. You haven't seemed to master efficient use of eating utensils. I have been on many cruises with Aussies and I always marvel at how they use their knives to push food up on the bottom of their forks. So inefficient. There is a reason that forks are curved and have tines. I wonder how you use your soup spoons?
Well, I have a hard time believing that. Even if there were any truth to it, their adorable accents, good humor and sunny attitude would more than compensate!

Haha, my husband does this! Drives me nuts! I just prong my food with the fork (sandwiches however are to be eaten with hands, not knives and forks )

I miss picking up a sandwich to eat. Heck, I miss having sandwiches and burgers! It's usually 1 slice of bread with the sandwich makings on top and even that is a knife and fork battle and getting it caught in nooks and crannies. Not worth it......yet........
