Were you physically sick after your jaw op?

#1 Post by Lc1987 »

I'm a little worried....

Basically, after I had my wisdom teeth taken out in 2011 I was sick when i went home...i presume from the anesthesia. They were compact and pretty deep down so I had to have them surgically removed.

This for me was the worst bit...feeling like i do when i'm travel sick (urgh) then being physically sick through a mouth that had just been stitched up and bleeding.

I'm about to book my jaw op date...and I'm now worried about feeling sick after that when my mouth is banded shut. How are you supposed to be sick when you can't open your mouth!?

So I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if so how did you deal with it??

Any advice would be fanstatic!!
Thanks :)

Hiya,

I had bimax surgery in Liverpool back in 2010 on NHS. I was sick after surgery but the other three girls on my ward weren't. I was told I puked so much because so much blood went into my stomach after surgery and it was a 7 hour op! So you can imagine the amount that came up - but - to be honest, I was so off my head on morphine I didn't feel pain or anything, it was just a motion and stressful because I was banded shut. You will be looked after so closely by nurses they will be right on it if you are sick and they clean you up after etc so don't worry too much you will be okay. Good luck with your surgery, if you would like any advice on recovery PM me :-)

I never vomited, although I felt a little bit nauseous often. Anytime I felt any slight discomfort in that area, I paged the nurse & asked for Zofran/Phenergan. The best medicine I was ever sent home with was ODT Zofran. It does not put you to sleep like Phenergan does, and addresses your nausea much faster due to the dissolving factors.

Hi, I was sick after surgery due to blood in my stomach, quite a few times in the first day but not at all after that. They didn't band me shut until a day later. Don't worry, the hospital know how to look after you. x

I get very sick from anesthesia and pain killers. So, I told everyone I saw, every chance I got, that I needed anti-nausea medicine. I told the surgeon, nurses, and the anesthesiologist. I was assured that I would be given anti nausea medicine during the surgery, after the surgery, and would have an Rx to go home with.

They gave me a lot of morphine after the surgery, and no one told the recovery nurse that I needed anti-nausea meds. So I had to wait while they gave me a different prescription for an IV nausea med (other than Zofran, which they were sending me home with) so that we could address the nausea caused by the morphine without limiting how much Zofran I could take when I got home.

I never threw up, but I sure wanted to for a while.

They also put me on Demerol instead of Vicodin, because I knew Vicodin made me nauseated. I don't know if the Demerol would make me sick without the Zofran, but with it I didn't have any nausea after surgery.

Anyway, the Zofran worked great. Just make sure that you assert yourself. Don't feel bad about repeating yourself.

I felt VERY nauseous as I came round, I mumbled something about feeling sick and was instantly given IV anti-emetics and that was that, no more problems. Do let the people looking after you know beforehand that you're worried about being sick after the surgery, it's very common but if they can be prepared to deal with it if they know you're specifically concerned. In a similar vein I was terrified of needing a catheter but after a few hours was begging them to let me have one (they did and the relief was wonderful ).

The type of anesthesia they use for jaw surgery is way different than an in-office wisdom tooth removal. Just tell the anesthesiologist that you easily get carsick and have gotten sick from anesthesia before. They will give you medicine during the surgery and post-op to make sure you don't have problems.

You do know that most narcotic painkillers cause nausea and if you use those post-op, you are more likely to feel nauseated.

If you have upper jaw surgery, they should put a tube down your throat to collect blood, so you shouldn't feel nauseated because of this. If you have lower jaw surgery, the bleeding post-op shouldn't be a problem.

Just voice your concerns and you should be fine. If you do throw up, it will come through the spaces in your teeth. You won't choke.

DId horribly after the first surgery using general anesthesia, nauseous, dizzy, disorientated, headache. After the 2nd, was absolutely fine. Go figure. Vomiting blood through a banded mouth was my BIGGEST concern post jaw surgery. And I was fine :)

Friend of mine had a very swollen face for a few days but took lots of pain killers.
He looks amazing now 6 months later.
Good luck

I was very worried about being nauseous as well! I was so sick to my stomach after getting my wisdom teeth out, but that was the tylenol with codeine, which I will NEVER take again. I did tell them my concerns at the hospital before my SARPE and they gave me a patch that worked great and sent me home with zofran. I will definitely ask for the patch again when I have my double jaw surgery.

I puked a time or 2. The nurse at the intensive care unit had to suck everything with suction tubes. She also flushed my lungs with water a couple of times to get blood out of there as well. It's kind of a weird feeling but it helps alot.

No actually flushing the lungs is actually quite relieving. She inject a small mount of water from a syringe via the tube you have in your nose. The water goes into your lung and she just use suction to get the blood and mucus out of there. Water is used to dilute the bad stuff in there.
