Re: Braces after 50 OMG!

#61 Post by debinator »

I just found out from one of the parents of one of my karate students that I am such a positive roll model for not only her kids but for all the students. When I asked her what she was talking about she told me that by me having braces the kids that have braces in their future are not so scared (hers being one of those kids) She said that her son was so happy to see that he wouldn't have to stop karate once he got braces on.

It's funny- when the kids ask me about my braces I just tell it like it is- yes it's a big deal at first , but you really do get used to it. I let them know that, sure I miss a lot of different foods and snacks, but it makes me appreciate things more too. Self defense wise you can bet your bottom dollar that I know how to protect my mouth! I make sure to tell them how important it is to take care of your body, no matter what you have to do- and that if people make fun of you they are the ones with a problem. I even let them take a close look if they really want to. I have one little girl that is entranced by my ligs :)

The kids at the dojo have made my braces journey so much more fun!

I must confess that you are much braver than I. That's the reason I ended up with Damon self-ligating brackets. I did not want to deal with the issue of coloured ligatures. Yay for you!

I really am a big kid at heart! I really don't care what anyone else thinks or says- I am having a good time, I'm not hurting anyone, and I even manage to make people smile on a regular basis even if they don't want to- what more could a body ask for :D

I want to come learn karate from you!

And they do make glow in the dark ligs. Bracedsurgerystudent had them at one point. Just do a google search for glow in the dark orthodontic ties.

SunshineRay- positive is the only way to be- sure Ig et negative from time to time but usually I can catch myself and find the up side, and if not the up side at least accept what is and move my focus to things that are positive. I am much happier and healthier this way- give it a try! It gets easier as you go

This IS how I live my life, it is how I approach everything- work, play, relationships-everything - or at least try to as much as I can. I am a much happier person since I have adopted this attitude :pinkbraces:

i need to embrace this attitude too, but how do you be so positive when people at work are annoying you, your so busy with work and people are demanding you to get things done now and they are not even directors, and when you are just simply having a bad day :(

my friend takes on the positive thinking too, but i just cannot do it...... :-((

I know this is very hard. My husband once said to me, "Every emotion is preceded by a thought." When I actually sat down to think about what he had said I realized he was completely right. So whenever I am feeling down I try to really think about what I've been thinking about. Usually I can trace my negative feelings to something I have been thinking about. Then if I change my way of thinking my mood will soon improve. Maybe this will help some.
