Drinking tea/coffee with braces

#1 Post by SunshineRay »

Did you give it up or does drinking through a straw prevent any staining. As I was drinking tea last night I realized I may have to stop once I get braced. I drink tea every evening.

I don't think a straw completely prevents staining, but it definitely helps.

I drink coffee every morning and don't notice a problem. Need my coffee.

I drank several coffees a day while braced (over about 16mths I think it was). No straws, just normal drinking. No staining whatsoever. Dont overthink it. Happy bracing.

I had to give up my 2-3 cups a day of Hot Tea. It stained my teeth horribly. I think the fact that Hot Tea is hot, slowly sipped, and contains tannins is pretty much a guarantee of staining with braces. (Unless you brush after every cup with whitening toothpaste I suppose)

Whitening toothpaste is usually quite abrasive. I try to avoid it at all cost.

Was I supposed to give up coffee? Oh, dear....guess I messed that one up.

You may have a little staining regardless of what you do. If it bothers you, see your dental hygienist more often for cleaning around your braces. If you have to get powerchains, don't get the white or clear ones. Try darker colors. Show off your adventuresome side.

Truthfully, you'll probably notice staining far more than anybody else will.

I still drink tea and coffee. Never used a straw. They hygienist just cleans very well every month around the brackets. There is some staining but I can live with that but not my tea and coffee.

I have certainly cut down on the amount of tea and coffee drunk and now have them both a lot weaker with more milk to reduce the chance of staining. No problems yet but it's only been three weeks so early days!

i was worried about the staining from coffee, i drink one every day with lunch (was morning) and i brush after lunch and havent had a problem. I don't use a straw, i think that is ridiculous, as you try drinking with a straw and the liquid still goes everywhere in your mouth! lol.

just drink it and enjoy :) if you are worried, have it when you are going to brush, like i do, with lunch :)

My grey powerchain is now a lovely neon green thanks to lemonade with mango juice. Big mistake!

I usually always drink with a straw but this time I didn't.

I can feel a big difference when I drink my coffee with a straw and without a straw. Sometimes I tried to drink my coffee without a straw because finding one felt like a hassle. I could feel the liquid was going all over the place right away, so I stopped to find a straw.

I'm hooked on black coffee, which probably isn't great. My sister got her teeth whitened after braces and they look fine now... So I'm just going to tell myself it will all be fine.

Perhaps if you do a swish-and-swallow with vodka following your coffee it would help mitigate the staining :-*

True!
I just noticed you are from Mt Airey. I'm originally from MD and still have some family in Frederick.
