Scissor bite

Have any of you guys had any experience with correcting a scissor bite? – as far as I could understand from my ortho, it’s kind of the opposite of a cross bite, meaning that the molars and premolars on the top arch stick out over the bottom molars – the uppers are tipped outwards and the lowers are tipped inwards (hope that explains it). I have tried looking it up on the internet but there was not a lot I could find on the subject (it was mostly about dogs ) so I just wanted to hear your experience with it and especially which method was used to fix it and how well it worked

That is exactly how my bite is!! My ortho hasn't referred to mine as a scissor bite but my upper molars are way over my bottoms. The outer cusps on my lower teeth meet the inner cusps on my upper teeth. It's really uncomfortable. Is that how yours is?

Yes, that sounds exactly like mine and it doesn’t feel natural at all – although it’s hard for me to compare since I haven’t had a normal bite as long as I can remember. Having had both crowding, open bite and scissor bite means you can get a little confused about how it is really supposed to feel

I would love to hear more about how your ortho decides to deal with it when you get to that point – especially concerning the molars furthest back if you also have problems with them (my back molars are somewhat tilted/uneven but they are not bracketed)

I did some research on this yesterday, Fluffy and found that it is technically called a "Brodie Bite". All the pictures that are shown are really severe though. Mine is not quite that bad. They say that that type of cross bite is really rare. Lucky us! I do have bands on my very last molars. (I have no wisdom teeth as they were cut out when I was 19.) So all of my teeth are banded or bracketed. My very back molars make contact and the edges of my 1st molars and second premolars only make contact at the inner tongue side cusps. My bite is open on the cheek side of 1st molars and 2nd premolars. My 1st premolars were extracted for treatment. I was given light elastics a week ago to start closing my bite towards the back. I hope I've explained that well enough. I'll need to take pics and show you what I mean. I'll have to ask my ortho about the scissor bite term when I go for my next adjustment July 24th and see what the treatment plan is for that. How far into treatment are you? I am almost 7 months into mine. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Great that you found out some more info on it and yeah, aren’t we lucky to be so special - as if I weren’t special enough already with the way my teeth looked 
(at least they have improved drastically).

I got onto this site a little late so I’m actually already 2 years into treatment which was also my estimated treatment time
(I’m not sure how long I have to go yet) I also had 4 premolars extracted and I’ve had both coil springs, a button, a TPA, TADs and of course elastics (amazing you can get used to having so much junk in your mouth )

I would love to hear more about what your ortho suggests for your treatment of this

I must be extra special as my top left molars stick out over the bottom molars and the top right molars sit inside the bottom molars.

Wow, that does sound like quite a challenging situation - hope your ortho is able to fix it
