Re: New to board new to braces
Welcome! I'm 43 and got braces last November. It has been an interesting experience..... This board is full of helpful advice and certainly removes the mystery from the process.
Re: New to board new to braces
Hi and welcome. I just turned 49 and have had braces since March. I find when I wake up to a new day I also have a different bite. It is always a surprise to find out which and how many teeth I have in contact with one another.

I wish the board had a "like" button so I could like every comment of support. It is so encouraging to see so many 40 & 50 something year olds wearing braces and banding together in support.
Re: New to board new to braces
Evidently there are more 40-50 year olds getting braces these days- maybe its the fact that 40-50 year olds see themselves differently now than they did 20 years ago- maybe it's that with all the advances in medicine and studies showing that dental health is linked to general health and cardiac health that more over 30's are getting braces not out of vanity but out of a real concern for their health. Maybe it's because the over 30's decided it was better tho keep their own teeth rather than have dentures. (My dad chose dentures when he was in his early 40's because it was the easiest and cheapest solution to his dental problems) Who knows what the answer is- All I know is that I will be 51 in september and am sporting metal braces upper and lower with glow in the dark green ligs (they come in an orangey glow in the dark too). I am having fun with these things since I have them on.
This is a great place for support and general camaraderie. Braces buddies abound!
Welcome and good luck on your journey!

Well, they do say that 40 is the new 30 so then 50 must be the new 40! I think you're totally right. My mother (she is now 82) considered herself old at 40 and like your father, decided to get dentures. When my mother was born, she expected to live to her early 60s, normal life expectancy at the time, but now 80 is quite normal and so many more people live into their 90s. Nowadays we have more choices, better technology, and a better understanding of the role of dental care in overall health. It is not so surprising to see more over 30s with braces.debinator wrote:Evidently there are more 40-50 year olds getting braces these days- maybe its the fact that 40-50 year olds see themselves differently now than they did 20 years ago- maybe it's that with all the advances in medicine and studies showing that dental health is linked to general health and cardiac health that more over 30's are getting braces not out of vanity but out of a real concern for their health. Okay, so update time... Spacers went in today. I listened to the advice and took Tylenol and Aleve before I went. A little achy but otherwise doing great. Braces on next Thursday. Will keep you posted.

Then you go ahead and whoop it up!!!! I refuse to feel bad about doing something that is good for me! Haters gonna hate - oh well that's their problem not mine
I love color, so i get all the different color ligs! I love life so I refuse to shut myself off from it just because I have a tin grin. I am so much more than the metal in my mouth. Sure i talk differently now, sure i have all that metal in my mouth, but I am still me. and when I get these bad boys off I am goiing to have a fabulous smile!! (it was good before the braces I can't wait to see the after!!)
Enjoy your life and don't let the braces get to you- they are only temporary and besides, they tell the world you care about yourself - and we all know that any kind of respect begins with self respect- you can't give it if you don't have it

I agree with you, it is really comforting to know that first, I am not an unusual adult going through this... And second, that there is a place I can come to where others know and understand what I am going through.maralv wrote:Hi, im new to this too, got brackets on top july 1 and the wire july 9. lower at a later date. its nice to have a place to talk to other adults on the same "journey"
