Getting braced tomorrow!

#1 Post by Shaushy »

Like my subject says, tomorrow is the big day! I'm excited, but also a bit stressed about it. I am a jr. high teacher, and only got a sub. for the two classes I'll miss while at the orthodontist. I haven't told anyone at work, or my students, that I am getting braces. It's going to be awkward going back to work with braces, LOL.

So, I'm wondering, should I expect to not be able to speak well right afterwards? As far as I know, I am only getting the uppers put on and nothing else yet.

Thanks,
Shaushy

Hey congrats on getting braces. I have the damon clear on top and metal on the bottom. You can expect a bit more lispy sssss sounds when you speak certain words---mainly words with s, c, and f in them. Its not bad though, just don't tighten your lips over your braces when you speak because it makes it worse.

I just have uppers, as well. (I'm getting the lowers in late January/early February.)

I don't have too much difficulty speaking. Your upper lip will feel weird because it's sticking out a wee bit. You might have pay more attention to projecting you voice when you're in the classroom.

You're students with braces will love you!

Everything went really well today. From start to finish, including signing paperwork and post-instructions, I was there exactly one hour. I got the Damon clear brackets on the top, and will go back for the bottom metal brackets on December 2. Because the appointment was so short, I was able to go back to work to finish out the last two periods. When I first walked in, I felt a bit awkward, but quickly got over it. I am a special ed. teacher to students with moderate to severe disabilities, so I have them in my class all day. In addition, I have four full time paras/aides. We are all very close, including the students. I didn't tell anyone that I was getting braces-they all thought I just had a dentist appointment, so when I walked in, they were a bit surprised. One of my students has braces and loved mine, LOL. She thinks were so alike that she invited me to hang out with her at her house, LOL.
Oh, I also didn't tell my husband I was getting them on today. He knew I had gone to a consultation, but didn't know when they would be put on. I could have sworn I told him, but he doesn't remember. So, needless to say, he was a bit surprised as well. He knows how awkward I feel about them, so he's taking every opportunity to point them out to others--I guess I'll get over the awkwardness pretty quickly.

Oh, one more thing...I found it odd that my ortho didn't take impressions of my teeth-only x-rays. Anyone else here not have impressions made prior to braces?

I would think they will take the impressions the day the braces go on.
