mouthguards

hey all

just got braces a few weeks ago and have been tearing up my lips at my wrestling classes.

anyone know of a good mouthguard? my ortho gave me a couple to try out but they are complete garbage. and i cant find one that fits anywhere else. i saw one on a website called shock doctor for braces. has anyone tried this one?

For wrestling, I have read that people have good success with a few of the products carried at DentaKit.com:

Lip Protector: http://www.dentakit.com/snshlipprfor.html

Brace Guard: http://www.dentakit.com/brgulippr.html

You should check with your coach to see if these products meet the regulations for your sport. Please understand also that these products are meant to protect your lips and gums from getting cut up. They don't provide "shock" protection that full mouthguards give.

Hey man, my ortho is currently working on my custom mouthguard, I went in today and he put some putty in my mouth. I recommend getting a custom one aswell, bloody expensive though 85 bucks!

well, the first one she gave me was the kind that basicly just fold in half - it simply does not fit whatsoever.... utterly useless. the other looks very similar to the denta guard, there is really nothing to bite down on firmly and its so large that it is hard to keep in. also the bottom potion does not cover the hooks at the bottom of my brackets.

i found the shock doctor online at a store close to where i am here. im gonna stop by there tommorow and check it out - 15 bucks

hey, id love to see and hear what your custom one looks like. it would be worth the 85 if it did the job. hell ive already spent a small fortune just to find out none of them fit. only problem is, i dont know about your teeth but mine have got alot of moving to do. and i jut dont think it would last very long

I've tried to fit mouthguards before, and I've never found one that could accomodate my teeth and their screwyness. They were always either too shallow, or not wide enough for my teeth, or the actual guard was too big to fit into my mouth at all.

It's a pretty safe bet that once the braces come off, eventhough I have to wear a fused retainer for pretty much the rest of my life... I'll have a custom mouthguard made. There's no way I'm going to let anything get near my chompers once they're all pretty.

damn... the shockdoctor is for tops only, dosnt cover the bottoms

too bad it fits the tops perfect, it just needs a second channel on the bottom... whats up with the fused retainer, that would suck... i hope i dont need one.

I'm not sure if "fused" is the right word, but it basically means that I won't be able to remove the retainer, it will be permanantly attached to my bottom front teeth, for life, or so my ortho said. I think a life sentence is a little heavy, but if that's what it takes.... so be it.

I'm a an assistant Martial Arts Instructor, and I have the Shock Doctor for Braces. I only use it when I spar and it's pretty comfortable, though it does feel different every time I put it in, because of the whole tooth movement thing. The only bad thing is that it only covers the top teeth, but for less than $20 it's a pretty good buy.
