Just spent 3.5 hours at my orthodontist's office getting my braces in. Ceramic on top, metal on bottom. I didn't realize that they were going to put this curvy metal rod at the roof of my mouth, and it's the most uncomfortable feeling right now. I feel like I'm going to swallow it. Hopefully this feeling will go away soon. It's sore right now, particularly when I bite down. Anyway, it doesn't look AS horrible as I had worried about, but I can feel it becoming more sore by the minute.
I keep reminding myself that this is going to be worth it. Two more years until they're off....I can't wait.

Sounds like you have a TPA (Trans Palatal Arch). You'll get used to it. If the little widgets used to attach it to your teeth start causing sore spots on your tongue, apply wax.
Mine was painless, but eating salad was a pain while I had it in; the lettuce kept getting wrapped around the wire.

Yes, I remember hearing something about an arch...does it stay in for the whole duration or just the first year? I don't remember whether I was told that it would just stay there for one year or not. I find it difficult to eat anything because food gets wrapped around it or get stuck between the wire and the roof of my mouth. My tongue touches it so often that it has now created an imprint on my tongue. :S
Re: They're in!
You'll have to ask your ortho how long it will be in... mine was not put on until late in my case.

Congrats. I had metal ones when I was younger and might have to get them again. Not sure as of yet
