I was originally recommended double jaw surgery by the first surgeon I went to but ultimately my ortho and the surgeon I went with said upper is enough. They said this was ideal because, as you pointed out already, there is higher risk with lower jaw surgery, especially with permanent numbness. All the feeling is back in my face and my gums are starting to "wake up" again: reduced sensation still in the gums but I can tell I'll eventually have full feeling back (can take up to 6 months or a year for full feeling to return).
Thanks for the reply! I don't remember the measurements from my consult with the oral surgeon. I have a crossbite too, so I'm worried that they are going to have to move the bottom. Your results are awesome! So you have a two piece lefort? I definitely need the maxilla widened too.

Hostet have you posted elsewhere here? I've been looking for upper jaw only cases like crazy! I haven't posted any pics here, but I do have a blog that I'm not really updating too often now. I plan to do a little more once I am closer to surgery. Right now I'm just dealing with the braces.

Samoorelaw, so my dr said about 4mm forward so you think they may move it 5 or maybe 6 to be safe from relapse? Did you have the stitch in your nose? And how are you feeling when u look in the mirror? I see some people are so upset even though they genuinely look way better. I'm pretty hard on myself about almost everything. Hoping i am happy and open about what I see in the end result.

I was told that the doctor moves you forward 2-3 mm extra to account for relapse. When I see my surgeon in about a week for my latest post-op appointment, I will ask.

I did have the alar stitch for my nose. While I thought my nose was wider after surgery, I think the width is back to normal, now after the swelling has gone down with the nose still having a slight upturn (which I like, especially in profile shots).

I do like my appearance much better. My chin looks more balanced because my upper jaw is where it's supposed to be, and I have cheekbones: my face was so sunken in before that it made me look like I had a Jay Leno chin and no cheekbones. With that in mind, I didn't have this surgery for cosmetic reasons. I did it solely to obtain a functional bite and to save my teeth from further wear. This surgery is too difficult physically and emotionally otherwise!

I hope you end up feeling satisfied with your decision to have this surgery. If you had asked me four months ago, right after my surgery, I would've told you that I regretted the decision to have surgery. Now more than four months post-op, I feel it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Kpw818, yes I've posted around here and there and started a few newer threads. I'm going back and forth about posting my before and after...I guess I get a little shy! But I love the outcome!!!!! And I was only moved 3mm forward in my top jaw! So do u have a time frame in mind when u may get the surgery? I'm 25 days post op and doing pretty well. The limited top lip movement is annoying and there's still some swelling...I know it can take time but I'm impatient!

It looks like I'm heading for upper jaw only, Le Fort I. The surgeon says recovery is easier with this than lower jaw or both. Could someone on this thread comment on how their recovery was?

thanks!

Recovery in a word with LeFort: arduous, and ongoing even 10 months later (still have numbness in gums that can take up to a year to come back...or it can be permanent). LeFort is not easy by any means and I find it odd that your surgeon would even imply that.
