Re: July Surgery Group??
Hello everyone, I am back home now after my BSSO, I stayed in overnight only as expected.
It was a long day, got into the surgical admissions lounge for 11am where I had some observations taken, weighed and given compression socks to put on. Then I later met a anesthetian registrar to go through some forms and she said I was second on the list and I would be taken at around 2.30pm for the op, so back to the lounge and then waited until I saw another doctor, went through some more forms. Then I had to wait to see my surgeon (well the registrar that would actually perform the surgery) so again some forms.
Back to the lounge when a nursing assistant came to get me to say the theatre had called for me so I changed into the gowns and they stored my bag. This was about 1.30pm they said the first person hadn't turned up so I moved up the list. We walked to the operating theatre started to feel nervous here, then we went to see another surgeon who just asked my name date of birth and if I had consented to the surgey, if that was my signature and what op I would be having. So he left and the assistant too and they said someone would come to get me. She was very nice (everyone was - a great team there at St Georges in Tooting) and we walked to the theatre, well is suppose where they prep you up) got on the bed and started to be warped up in blankets and stuff attached etc the cannula went in and another anesthetian chatted away and they said something would be injected in and I would start to feel woozy and I had a mask put on with something being pumped in. That's it, next thing it's 5pm and I'm in recovery, a male nurse took care of me for two hours, taking observations, two ice packs on face heard they felt I was quite hot, but it was a very hot day yesterday like 25 degrees. I felt sick and they gave me anti sickness drugs through IV. Surgeon came and saw me who operated, said it was perfect, all to plan, normal swelling no nerve severed. Doozed in and out and at 7pm they took me to my ward.
I had painkillers and antibiotics through IV, regular obs by the nurses, had my parents visit about 9pm even though visiting hours had finished, started to have some water as mouth was dry. Felt discomfort, couldn't really close mouth properly, slept in upright position. I have a weak bladder plus the position of the bed meant I was pressing down on bladder so I would wake up for a toilet break dragging my drip with me. I had a yoghurt last night and breakfast was yoghurt and juice. Saw a doctor yesterday from the max facial team who said I would need to be banded today but the op had went well.
Had my shower and would you know it my surgeon turns up to do his rounds so had the nurse knocking for me! So he poked in mouth, asking if he remembered we had spoken after the surgery, I said yeah. He added that the left nerve took a long time to remove from the bone. Said I needed to be banded and I asked about my diet as I hadn't had guidance on this so he said he would get the dietitian to come see me and I needed X-rays.
So waited until I could get my X-rays had to walk with a nurse over to max facial unit which was far, it's a huge hospital. Had my X-rays taken then waited to be collected to see the orthodontist. I'm in my Jim jams at the moment, but who cares right? Saw an ortho and asked whether I had been banded I said no and I had never used bands for my ortho treatment. So he asked for a second opinion, saw my X-rays which were on screen, just lots of little metal bits in the jaw so funny.
The senior person came in and saw the bite and said it needed help so he asked for the bands and put them on on both sides, some across and some from top to bottom. They can't be removed by me. I have to go see them again next Wednesday.
Walked back to my ward and waited for the dietitian she came with a booklet and instructions on what to eat and with a bag of shakes some in powder and other in liquid. I'm on a liquid diet for a week then onto mashed/puréed foods.
The nurse gave me some cup a soup as everyone had their lunch and I drank two milkshakes. I then fel asleep until the nurse gave me my discharge letter and they had dispensed my painkillers and antibiotics and mouthwash. The final wait was for my signed off work certificate, essential as I need to show it at work to still get paid, that took ages as a max facial doctor had to sign it. Finally got it on time when my lift arrived, we left at about 2.30pm.
I've taken photos which will upload soon, happy with results though I currently look like quagmire from family guy lol.

Wow! Thanks so much for the update, I love how in depth some people can be, I'm weird and love all the details haha, I'm going through surgery next year and just find any info I can get is all so fascinating. Glad to see you're going ok so far
I'm worried about how I react to anaesthesia especially as my surgery will be a few hours, especially because my last surgery I felt so ill in recovery and the doctor said that's the narcotics in the anaesthesia, the nurses only gave me something in my drip about an hour later. It was horrible, also it seemed to make me really restless for about 5 hours after, restlessness (as in really physically can't sit still or rest) plus nausea is a horrible combo in recovery. I guess knowing how my last experience went and it was no where near as major as jaw surgery I wonder how I will wake up feeling, I wish they could give me something in my drip to stop feeling sick BEFORE I come to.

Very cool Colbrit! It sounds like my experience was similar to yours!
It's been about 4 days since my surgery now... The swelling has reduced a bit, but the bruising is awful. I can feel my lower lip quite well, but have minimal sensation from my upper lip to my eyeballs!!!
The hardest part for me at this time is the soreness of my sinuses...but I finally broke down, and my spouse is getting me a humidifier that should help!
My parents are coming into town tomorrow to help look out for me, and to keep me from experiencing too much cabin fever!
I saw my surgeon on Thursday, and he says all is looking good. I'm going a little crazy not being able to get in there and brush as good as I want to.
I remember being prepped for surgery, but have no memory beyond joking with my surgeon that he couldn't let my husband draw crude pictures on my face while I was out, hehe!
Pictures to come!!!

That's ok UnevenJAG, I do tend to go a bit over the top with explanations, I love a bit of detail lol. I was sorry to hear about your apprehension with the recovery, I've only ever had 2 previous general anesthesics and this was the first time I had nausea, so fingers crossed you won't have the same reaction as last time.UnevenJAG wrote:Wow! It's day 4 post surgery, taking my meds been a chore, dissolving the anti biotics into water or any other liquids has not been able to take away the bitter taste, really struggled and wanted to puke it up. So last night I took a chance and swallowed the capsules fine so that's how ill do it going forward. I'm still swollen up and today some brushing appeared alongside the jawline. It hurts to eat even whettabix or jelly and custard, keep on trying to remember to suction everything up instead of moving the jaws as it hurts.

Hi lissybear22 hope the recovery is going well, so glad we have now got the surgery over and done with and can concentrate on the next period. Was yours a double surgery, is that why you have the sinus issues?poor you.lissybear22 wrote:Very cool Colbrit! It sounds like my experience was similar to yours!

I'm 4 days post op, still pretty swollen and I just noticed this morning I have some green bruising appear for the first time over my jawline on both sides of my face. It hurts to eat anything other than liquids through a straw, like my bran with milk breakfast or jelly and custard or even yoghurt. I'm still applying ice packs, it gives some relief. I have to see my surgeon on Wednesday which is a week after the op.

How'd your f/u go? And how is your swelling?Colbrit7 wrote:That's ok UnevenJAG, I do tend to go a bit over the top with explanations, I love a bit of detail lol. I'm officially 12 days post op, and for the first time am feeling like a normal person again! I had a Lefort I; I think it was the turbinectomy that really caused my sinus issues though! I am looking pretty normal over here, save for the bruising.... But that is slowly going away. I will head back to work- half days - starting Tuesday, and I'm pretty pumped!
I really will add some pictures soon, but I'll have to get on a real computer to do that.... And I'm feeling rather lazy... Sorry.... But it will happen!

Re: July Surgery Group??
Hi lizzybear22
The follow up was good, saw my surgeon and he was happy with the results and my incision points are healing nicely. I have to go again 20th August for the next follow up. As my orthodontist is not in town until 22nd July I was told to tell the hospital so I could see one of theirs. I was banded by them the next day of the surgery and at this appointment I mentioned it again so I saw another of their orthodontists. She changed my elastic bands, again in a box formation.
I'm 11 days post op and I started to sleep normally ie on my side 2 nights ago, I was getting little shots of pain when trying to sleep, but I'm very adverse to taking painkillers so I just let it pass. My swelling peaked probably in the first week, and I had very little green bruising, some on the jawline and some on the neck. I will also post some photos when I get on my laptop.
Washing my mouth, such an ordeal up until a few days ago, everything was just so sore, mouth cuts on the opening of the mouth etc, but I can now bear to pull my mouth open so I can make sure I can try to reach the back molars. Bit difficult with these elastics in the way which are a totally new experience for me as I have never had them in my treatment yet.
Sensation has returned to my jaw lines but it's still all tingling in my central chin area and lower lip and lower gums.
Eating is a hassle, I'm on a soft fork mashable diet, so everything just gets mashed up but it's a slow process and it's tiring I can't open the mouth too much, but somehow have managed to get the food in the little gap.
Wishing you well with your recovery.

Re: July Surgery Group??
Hi all;
I just posted some photos and wanted to keep you updated. I'm 23 days post-op and all is going very well. I am signed off work until 1st August and my energy levels are getting back to normal. I am still on a fork mashable diet. I saw my orthodontist for the first time on the 22nd and she did lots of things.
I had been banded up at the hospital after my op and then had the elastics changed a week after but they didn't give me any replacements and I'd never worn elastics before. Both times a double box formation on each side which really restricted my speech and mouth opening. The elastics snapped one by one, first one about a week before I had to see my Orthodontist, then another one on the same side the Saturday before my appointment (so I had a bit of jaw freedom) and then the last one the day before the appointment. So my ortho took the elastic out and then proceeded to do some torture on me!
She replaced both my upper and lower archwires, replaced my powerchains upper and lower, the pain was unbearable when she was manipulating my lowers, she couldn't pull the archwire out she saw my grimaces so she had to cut them. And my front lower teeth were sooo painful when she put the powerchain on it was the worse pain in all my treatment of 2 years plus.
She said that my jaw was doing something when it was in a relaxed position, so we needed to get the elastics to do a lot of work to get everything where it should be. Then we took some photos - but not the one where you have to put a mirror in your mouth as the nurse saw I couldn't really open my mouth wide enough.
The nurse then taught me to use the elastics and gave me two bags of them. I'm wearing them in a class II triangle formation at all times during the day and double elastics during sleep. I never take painkillers with my braces but I took one that night, some left over from my operation.
Next appointment with ortho is next week. Thanks for reading and hope you all ok with your recoveries.
