Hi! I seem to be in the minority regarding my impacted canine. The orthodontist and oral surgeon were concerned about my impacted adult tooth severing nerves related to my other teeth in coming down. I don't remember the exact details, but if something like that happened, it was possible I could lose one of my adult teeth. So, we decided to have the impacted adult canine removed and keep the baby canine as it seems to have a strong/long root. I had the surgery a year ago from tomorrow. Apparently it was pretty complicated as only an oral surgeon felt comfortable and the surgery went on longer than they thought.

I wasn't able to go back through all 24 pages, did anyone else have to go this route?

Hi cconant1833, I haven't heard of keeping the baby canine but makes sense if it has a good root. Unfortunately, my baby canine had no root, not sure how it was hanging on for dear life.

I'm still waiting for my adult tooth to make an appearance 5 weeks after exposure and activation. I literally check 3x a day for changes. Utterly silly but I can't help it.

Oh wow that is crazy! Sometimes I get a little jealous that I couldn't go that route and have my adult tooth brought down but I get solice in the fact that I don't have to wait and hope it comes down haha. I would definitely check it multiple times a day if I was in that situation too! I check every day now just to see if my teeth are moving with my braces haha. I just pray that my baby tooth doesn't ever decide to fall out! If that happens, I have to get an implant. So far so good!

I looked in the mirror tonight when brushing and noticed I can see the beginning of a new link! :jump: :jump: :jump:
I got a little discouraged at my June appointment when it hadn't moved enough but now I know it'll be ready when I have my appointment on the 30th.
I'm especially looking forward to this one as my ortho will explain my panos to me. I can feel a bump in the roof of my mouth where the tooth is. It's still got a ways to go but at least it's moving. How's everyone else doing?

Mine's still sitting in the roof of my mouth, exposed and bracketed but no movement yet, I'd say I won't see any movement for a few months.

I have been told by my ortho to brush the exposed tooth, let me tell you it's not fun, it's still very sensitive gum tissue and brushing it even lightly isn't pleasant.

I look forward to the day they remove the palatal arch wire and I can eat without food getting caught in between that and the roof of my mouth, the small things lol.

Congratulations, millersgirl! That's great news.

I think my tooth is moving but not how I expected. Since my tooth is right above my gum, I thought it would come down through the gum but it seems to be coming out the front of the gum. At least, that's where I'm seeing more chain and possibly a little bit of the bracket poking through. For a while, I was looking up into the gum and asking my friends to do the same. We thought we saw some white that could be a tooth but the next week, there was less there. Complete mystery.

Had an adjustment today. Ortho confirmed movement. He is still skeptical. Today he finally went over my pano in depth so I know more of what's going on. They were able to put a decent amount of pressure on my tooth today...it didn't hurt at the time and he made the comment, "wow you're tough." Well, now about 12 hrs later it is starting to throb a bit. That's good though, right? No pain, no gain! He said next time (Sept) they're going to take the wire out and start using bands to move it. It sure is a long process but I'm still feeling hopeful.

No pain, no gain is right. It's amazing how long and tedious this process is.

I had an adjustment today which was uninspiring, to say the least. She said she thought the tooth had moved but couldn't remember what it looked like before. She said we'll know when we see the tooth (seems obvious) or take an x-ray but it's too soon to take an x-ray.

I expected the same thing but it seems like the first step is to pull parts of the tooth out from the gum and then move it into place. A pretty decent chunk of my tooth is exposed at the roof of my mouth right now.

Unfortunately I was right in suspecting that there still wasn't enough room for it to come down. I don't understand why he didn't realize this during the past few months but now i'm back to trying to make that gap bigger *sigh*

He also said it will need to be straighten which I guess is adding even more time into all this.

Sorry to hear there's not enough room, SandSnake. Not sure either why he's just figuring that out now. They should be able to create extra space pretty quickly so hopefully it won't be a problem. Good to hear about your progress and mine isn't dissimilar.

I CAN SEE MY TOOTH!!!

Nine months after my exposure surgery and my bloody canine finally makes an appearance! I was watching a movie and eating chips last week when I felt a small indent on the roof of my mouth. Naturally, I couldn't keep my hands, toothbrush, and mind off of it. I thought the chips had scratched my gums but lo and behold it was my freakin tooth.

Fast-forward a week and I can see the whole tip of the tooth! Every morning and every night, I brush the area twice as long as I used to before with the thought that the more I brush the area, the quicker I'll see the whole tooth. Call me crazy but it seems to be working!

Anyway, I can tell that it's kinda rotated. I think it's facing the left side of my mouth so there's gonna be some rotation involved while bringing it forward to line it up with its other buddies. Honestly, I don't care. The tooth is there and at least trying to get to the right spot. Can't ask for more. I'm gonna take x-rays at my ortho appointment in 3 days so I can't wait to see what it shows. I hope in another month or two, it'll be in its spot and this long, emotional process will be over.

No matter what stage you're in, pre-exposure surgery or the terrible waiting game, don't give up hope. That's the only thing we got in this terrible process: hope that one day we'll be rocking a full smile.

Siobhan: Definitely nice to know we're all on the same boat

mypearlywhites: Congrats! I'm so happy for you. Mine made an appearance about a month after the surgery. It's been a little over 5 months now and a god chunk of it is exposed and like yours it's also coming out sideways: http://i59.tinypic.com/359it76.jpg

I'm going to start brushing it more often as well just in case ;)

I have an appointment at the end of the month so i'm hoping he'll start rotating it and moving it forward if there's enough space. Were you guys told how much tooth needs to be exposed before that process begins? Also, have you noticed your other teeth moving?

Sandsnake: Yes, I've noticed my other teeth moving...A LOT. My whole smile is crooked. I now have an overbite, which I never had, on the right side of my mouth (opposite side of my impacted canine). My smile looks lopsided cuz my lips come out more on the right side where all my front teeth have shifted and my lips on the left side of my mouth kinda look concaved in. Obviously, it's because of the ridiculously large, open hole for my canine on the left side of my mouth. I feel like one of those zombies on the Walking Dead where the top half of their mouth has shifted to the right and their jaw is going to the left. Freak, right?

I have the same question about when they bracket the exposed canine and start bringing it forward...can't wait till that day. Hopefully, it's soon for the both of us, Sandsnake.

Oh, I finally got some rubber bands. I got my first experience during my appointment yesterday and my ortho said they will fix my crooked bite. THEY SUCK. The rubber bands made all my teeth angry within the first hour of wearing them. I can take the pain though...as long as it fixes the Walking Dead lopsided mouth look I'm rocking.

Hi guys, has anyone heard of teeth "jumping"? At my last visit to the ortho, rather than a chain to pull my previously impacted canine, he put an additional wire on the tooth and connected this to my archwire. He told me that with the extra pulling from the wire sometimes teeth can "jump", but we don't want this to happen as the movement will be too sudden for the tooth.

Well I went back today (one of my colour ties came off), he was concerned about how much the tooth had moved in a week and a half and had to cut the wire off it so now the tooth is free with nothing pulling. Does anyone know if "jumping" causes damage to roots or the stability of the tooth? I can't seem to find much info on this kind of thing :(
