Hello, haven't posted on here for a while because there hasn't been much to report *yawn*. So since my last post on here I have had two further 'adjustments' on my activated canine. Ortho and I cannot see an obvious movement so next appointment I will be having another x-ray taken to see if anything is visibly different above my pallet...If not then it looks like resorting to plan B

alice1987 wrote:Hi guys, has anyone heard of teeth "jumping"? At my last visit to the ortho, rather than a chain to pull my previously impacted canine, he put an additional wire on the tooth and connected this to my archwire. He told me that with the extra pulling from the wire sometimes teeth can "jump", but we don't want this to happen as the movement will be too sudden for the tooth.
Well I went back today (one of my colour ties came off), he was concerned about how much the tooth had moved in a week and a half and had to cut the wire off it so now the tooth is free with nothing pulling. Does anyone know if "jumping" causes damage to roots or the stability of the tooth? I can't seem to find much info on this kind of thing
I haven't heard of jumping before. Whatever it is, it sounds like your Ortho is sufficiently cautious and has a plan so I wouldn't be too concerned with damage to your roots. Good luck.
Cheers Siobhan, reassurance always helps. I know I'm probably over-reacting, but I'm just super protective of my canines now. After all the time, money and emotional effort put into getting braces and pulling them into place, I would be absolutely devastated if something went wrong!
Had my 6th appointment today. Ortho thinks by next month the tooth will be ready to be pulled towards the front and straightened. Prayer circle!
mypearlywhites: I'm on the same boat as you then. My bite was already a bit uneven but now it's much more so. I'm hoping that by the end this will be corrected.
jenna88: How long have you been pulling the tooth for? I think it's definitely best to do an xray and figure out whether this is a waste of time for you or not.
I had surgery a week ago to attach a chain onto my impacted left canine. It's now just dangling down in the middle of my mouth which is problematic :P I have to wait 3 months before they can do anything!
The operation went okay but I ended up with the left side of my face swelling up and having a black eye!

I think its been about 4 months 1 week since I had my tooth activated (got a little ticker timer thing on my signature).
So I got my x-ray today, I went with a mind set of expecting the worst (thinking the tooth would not have moved at all) and then it wouldn't be such a let down. However, ortho can see movement, yes it is slow progress...but definitely movement. On the picture attached, the top x-ray was on the 31/12/2013 and bottom x-ray was today 2/9/2014. I have outlined my front tooth to make it more clear and also outlined the impacted canine and I know it might be hard to make sense of but the shaded area is where the impacted tooth has moved so a significant difference to previous x-ray. The impacted tooth was sitting right behind the root of my front tooth but is moving more towards the second tooth now. This is really good news for me, I am over the moon ortho is going to continue with the 6 weekly adjustments applying more pressure each time.

Keptin: Oh my, 3 months? Is that normal? I only waited about a week. And to have that dangling must be so uncomfortable, hopefully the chain isn't too long.
jenna88: Ah yes I see the movement
But what is that metal bridge apparatus that goes from the left side of your mouth to the right? I've noticed some other people on here have it as well but I haven't.
Just back from my Ortho, three months post-activation. My tooth was on the gum side of my mouth, not the roof, and I've been concerned because the hardware and what looks like tooth is coming out the front of my gum. My Ortho said it's normal. She took an x-ray and said she THINKS the tooth is moving but it's still very early (???). Previously, the tooth was lined up at the bone of the adjacent tooth and now it looks like it's moved down slightly. So that's good news. I asked her how long and she said it could be 6-8 months. She said it's easy to move teeth around once they're in but moving a tooth through the bone takes a while. So, I'm still impatiently waiting.
I have a quick question. I have an impacted canine, however it is too impacted & the chances of puling it down with the chain and braces is very very low. I was wondering if I would need a surgery to remove the impacted canine or if I could just get the braces.. I'd like to note that I have a baby tooth with really strong roots. A crown will be put on it so that it can last a lifetime. However, do i need to surgically remove the canine from my gum? or can I just leave it there and go on with putting the braces once I get the crown on the baby tooth?
Hi! I seem to be in the minority regarding my impacted canine. The orthodontist and oral surgeon were concerned about my impacted adult tooth severing nerves related to my other teeth in coming down. I don't remember the exact details, but if something like that happened, it was possible I could lose one of my adult teeth. So, we decided to have the impacted adult canine removed and keep the baby canine as it seems to have a strong/long root. I had the surgery a year ago from tomorrow. Apparently it was pretty complicated as only an oral surgeon felt comfortable and the surgery went on longer than they thought.
I wasn't able to go back through all 24 pages, did anyone else have to go this route?
Hi,
I think this is the route I'm taking.. Can you please give me more details on your situation? did you get the surgery before or after braces?
Also, if it was before the braces, how long did you have to wait till you got the braces after the surgery?
I, too, had an impacted canine and got braces in January of '14. I was told it would take quite awhile for my tooth to come down because I was 42 years old. They weren't kidding. I'm in my tenth month and my canine has made it's appearance within the past few days. Wahoo!
I'm a little worried though. I can see a little more than the tip of the tooth, and it's kind of a medium to darkish gray color. Not white at all. Has anybody else experienced this. My ortho appointment isn't for another 2 weeks and I'm a little bothered by this. Anybody have some reassuring words? :)

My oral surgeon told me that even if we couldn't drag the canine tooth down, it would need to come out so that it didn't cause any problems for the other teeth below it.
