Mouth rinse - my experience

#1 Post by Nadira »

Day 26 post BSSO
The first bottle I used was PERICHLOR. pharmacy science
This gave me zombie mouth, black coating on my tongue and teeth. Not a stain as much as gunk on any spot that was not spotless. So the teeth you can not brush, back teeth and under the splint and all the areas you can not reach when first out of the hospital. :yuck:

My second bottle is PERIDEX, 3M
This is not creating black scum, and not as strong of an after taste. :D
It costs a few dollars more well worth the cost.

Both are Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12%

I've been using Peridex as well for 2 weeks since my Wilckodontics surgery. I have not been able to brush my top teeth, and I concur. No major staining.

The information on the bottle does say that staining can happen, especially on white fillings.
So far so good.

Day 30 BSSO

I asked the tech about the brands, she said the early mouth rinse was dealing with more sloughing of cells so that is why the thicker stain or my word scum. The PERIDEX does taste better. And when I can get my first cleaning all the stain should be removed.

how long are you supposed to use the antibacterial mouse rinse? I only used one bottle for the first 3 weeks or so, and then switched to regular mouth wash. I don't have a refill for the rinse either.

I did double jaw surgery.

I asked my orthodontist that a few days ago, he said to keep using it until I could brush properly again. Once the bottle the hospital gave me ran out, I was able to buy another one - I think it's quite widely available under a few different brand names depending on where you live, you shouldn't need a prescription :)

I am on my second bottle, and overheard someone further along advised to keep using this and then regular zero alcohol mouth wash in between, the morning after breakfast and the evening before bed.

I can tell you from my SARPE experience that the Peridex does stain teeth, but it's like a brownish drank-too-much-coffee kind of stain and it can be cleaned off by your hygienist.

I get a blue residue from the Peridex on some spots but not a lot. My Rx said to use it for two weeks but I'm almost on week 4, haha! I feel like it's keeping the inside of my mouth cleaner than a regular mouthwash would. I'm also a little paranoid about keeping my gums healthy and I hope this is helping.
Treatment-
  • Braces: In-Ovation L (lingual) on top, and In-Ovation R (metal) on bottom
  • SARPE
  • BSSO advancement
  • estimated 18-22 months
SARPE
  • Expander installed Jan 14th 2013
  • Surgery Feb 18th 2013
  • Turn 26 days to 13mm. Gap between teeth maxed out at 12-13mm.
  • Gap down to 7mm Apr 18
  • Gap Closed Aug 6
  • Expander out Sep 19
BSSO
  • Insurance approved, surgery scheduled for Dec 18!

X-ray and check up today, at the end of my second bottle I do not need to continue with the PERIDEX.
One less thing to do! And hopefully no more stain build up as at 5 weeks it is enough.
